I'm not sure why I haven't bought this before, but it's great. My soldering iron hasn't looked cleaner! I find the temperature stays more consistent because I'm not using water anymore. Highly recommend.

No twisting or jabbing, just poke your iron in a couple of times and voila, a nice shiny tip. It’s very lightweight, just the right size to keep on your workstation all the time and doesn’t take up too much space.

The Hakko 599B soldering iron tip cleaner is essentially a brass scouring pad inside a very thin, metal, two-piece holder with a domed top section and flat cylindrical bottom section. Pop the two metal sections apart, drop in the scouring pad and the pad is accessible through a large angled opening in the top section. Insert soldering iron tip into hole and push/rotate into scouring pad for cleaning. So far so good. There are even three very small rubber pads on the bottom section to help keep the whole assembly planted when inserting a tip for cleaning.Problem is - the assembly is so very, very light it MUST be held down with a second hand while tip cleaning or it simply skids around the work surface or just tips over. If it just had more mass, tip cleaning with one hand would be easy. This is VERY easy to fix.The solution to this is to weight the bottom using some inexpensive, heavy, non-combustible everyday object, to give the tip cleaner enough mass to be stable. I used pennies. Cheap, heavy, nearly indestructible and easy to pour into the bottom of the cleaner assembly. The top section still goes on easily (the pennies simply move out of the way as you wiggle it on) and if you fill up the bottom section (about 50-75 cents), it gets pretty heavy and whole assembly just doesn't move when cleaning a soldering iron tip.The scouring pad then sits on top of the pennies at the bottom - and unfortunately tends to push the domed top of the cleaner assembly off. To fix that, I used a 1/2 inch strip of blue paper painters tape around the seam to hold the top and bottom sections together. It does not melt and make a mess (and contaminate the soldering iron tip) like Scotch transparent tape could, does not easily burn in this application and never has to be taken off. And its still easy to change the brass pad by simply pulling it out or pushing it into the assembly through the tip cleaning hole, which is quite large. No need to take the assembly top and bottom sections apart.So - problem(s) solved. Cleaner now works great on any surface, has a lot of heft and doesn't move or tip over. And if the included pads on the bottom ever come off, they can easily be replaced by self-sticking bumper pads, like Scotch SP950-NA, available at Target or any similar store.
