I have only used them for a project into aluminum. Bought them to drill holes for installing OEM back up sensors on my 2018 dodge ram flat bed. the drilled the wholes perfectly. I did use a starter punch, so no comment on the self-starting feature.

I'm a machinist by trait and I look for certain things when buying personal cutting tools. This step drill met all my criteria for what I wanted, High Speed Steel (HSS) is bare minimum, this covers that and the M42 designation means it has cobalt in it also making it even more wear resistant, even better, the coating on it isn't the normal cheap black oxide either or even Tin (often referred to titanium as a selling point) this is AlTin which I more heat resistant and more wear resistant than the other two I mentioned. I needed to add some riv-nuts to my car for a rear stress bar and where the manufacturer said to install that part was double layed sheet metal. This step drill cut through both layers like it was nothing, I actually almost oversized the holes because it cut so well! Great tool with excellent performance, especially for the cost!

I was stringing lights above patio for my girlfriend I needed to drill thru trim to mount blocks on sun room when I tried with a traditional bit I was there for a half hour not making a scratch when I bought this remarkable but it took me ten min to drill and mount 3 blocks of wood amazing

Trying to drill a 1/4" hole with Ultra S/P cutting fluid just as it began to cut the tip snapped. Was expecting a little more durability .
