This type of safety device is a MUST have, if you have gas or propane at your house. That is, as long as it is reliable. There are multiple types of detectors out there. All have different features. This detector is an AC ONLY model. It has a short cord that will allow you to place it away from an outlet and it only uses one socket. One odd feature of this model is that it has a compartment for holding a battery backup, but it ISN'T wired! Perhaps a different version of this may have one?Set up is very simple. It comes with a readable manual in pretty good English. You simply plug it in, watch it do a countdown on the red LED display, then the test button turns green AFTER countdown is complete. While running testing in my house, the red LEDS constantly fluctuated between 4.8 and 5.4 which appear to be safe and normal. The LEDS and green test button stay illuminated continuously. To test my unit, I first got a BIC lighter and released gas without igniting. I was about 2 feet away. Initially, not much happened, but in about 5 seconds the alarm went off! Flashing RED test button, numbers showing over 10 and a VERY loud voice in English warning of gas detection, with directions on steps to take. The voice was a little distorted, but I could hear words correctly. There is also a LOUD siren at same time. Then, the RED LED numbers began to drop. When I fanned the box with a newspaper, the numbers dropped quicker, so it was doing pretty much real time. Then it went silent and button for test turned green. My second test was with a propane torch. I released some gas without igniting it at same distance as lighter. Once again, the numbers began to climb, and it alarmed with the loud voice and siren. As gas naturally dissipated, the numbers again dropped back down to 4.8 and alarms went off. The butane and propane tests worked as advertised but I am not sure how the numbers displayed related to PPM. The most important thing is that two different types of gasses were detected. I did not test for natural gas or CO. I would assume these would be detected as well.

I love that this device detects both carbon monoxide and natural gas leaks for an added layer of security. It has a nice bright readout which is reassuring when you walk in to your room and see a nice glowing zero. I keep this in the garage where my furnace is. The sticker on the box states that the detector is UL certified for both gas and carbon monoxide detection and shows my particular device has a pretty recent production date. My only gripe is that for something that is meant to be mounted up high, why did they place the cord on the top of the device? It makes for an awkward looking installation.

So, I bought this detector for my garage. I have multiple motorcycles and do all of my own maintenance. As such, my uninsulated garage is mainly a "shop", and in the winter it gets COLD! So, I use a propane heater to make it nice and toasty when working on things out there. So, there are two possible safety concerns with that. One is if I were to have a propane leak, and the other is that the propane heater I have is rated for "outdoor use only". I have used it for years without problem and ALWAYS use a CO detector when using the heater for this reason. BUT, my previous detector ONLY detects CO and not combustible gases. This one does both so is ideal for my needs. I did test this unit for combustible gas, and it works! This detector talks to you in English too. When I first plugged it in, It began a self-calibration and the voice tells you to please wait for the countdown timer, which is visible on the front, Then, once the countdown reaches zero the device is ready to function. Next I held a small Bic butane lighter near one of the sampling ports on the side of the detector. Within a few seconds the voice started telling me that combustible gas had been detected, to not ignite, and to open a window for ventilation. After that little spiel, the alarm starts. You can also see a numerical readout on the front of the unit. It reads 0 normally, and when gas was introduced, the number started climbing. I'm not exactly sure what these number represent (PPM perhaps?), but it's at least a visual that it's detecting something out of the ordinary. In addition to the digital readout and audible alarms, there is a circular LED lighted area around the silence button on the front of the unit. When the unit detects something this turns from its normal green to red. So that gives both audible and visual signals that something has been detected. After that test, I went out to the garage and started a bike. I then held the unit near the exhaust outlet and immediately the numbers began to climb on the readout. The voice then told me that carbon monoxide had been detected, and advised me to open a window for ventilation. This unit definitely adds another layer of safety that I previously didn't have. So, I'd say that if you have gas in your home, the potential for either a gas leak, or CO poisoning exists. And that makes a device like this essential! If for nothing other than peace of mind, and not to mention the safety of your family. Get one, test it, and USE it!
