Park Tool FR-5.2G being used on a cassette lockring

Park Tool FR-5.2G Bicycle Cassette/Disc Brake Lockring Tool with 5mm Guide

Park Tool offers a full range of tools for bicycle cassette lockring removal and installation. The FR-5.2G fits 12 spline 23.4mm diameter tool fittings - the most common tool fitting found on 7-12 speed bicycle cassette lockrings, including many models made by Shimano, SRAM, SunRace, SunTour, Chris King and others. Also fits Shimano disc brake lockrings with 12 internal splines. Thin wall construction allows use without removal of cones and locknuts. Features a 5mm guide pin to stabilize the tool when used with quick-release hubs. The 1" hexagonal base can be used in conjunction with a socket, wrench, or bench vise. Heat treated alloy tool steel construction for a lifetime of use.

The FR-5.2G has 12 splines that are approximately 23.4mm across at the widest point.

PARK TOOL: YOUR GUIDE TO THE WORLD OF CASSETTES & FREEWHEELS

Cassette lockring with arrow denoting counterclockwise rotation

CASSETTE OR FREEWHEEL?

To determine the type of rear sprocket system you have, find the tool fitting on the sprocket set. Spin the sprockets backwards. If the fitting spins with the cogs, it is a cassette system. If the tool fitting does not spin with the cogs, it is a freewheel system.

Campagnolo cassette lockring

CAMPAGNOLO OR NO?

If you have a multi-speed cassette, you need one of two tools. If the cassette, derailleur, or shifter are labeled with Campagnolo, the tool for you is the BBT-5/FR-11. Otherwise, you will require a tool in our FR-5.2 line.

Cassette lockring tool, chain whip and adjustable wrench removing a bicycle cassette lockring

THE RIGHT TOOLS FOR THE JOB

In addition to the correct tool, you will also need a method of driving it (such as an adjustable wrench or 1" socket) as well as a chain whip to hold the cassette in place as you remove the lockring. Park Tool makes a full line of chain whips and wrenches for this very purpose.

Park Tool makes a full line of cassette lockring and freewheel tools to empower you to remove the rear cogs of virtually any bicycle. Here's a selection of tools similar to the FR-5.2G:

Quality designed tool you would expect from park tool. Works like a charm! Fit my sram 10-42 on my gravel bike and fit my buddies shimano 9 spd cassette as well. Excellent value!

Park tools are of course the standard, found in bike shops everywhere. This tool adds a pilot shaft to the standard design that makes using it just a little easier- and well worth the small extra cost.

Park Tools make some of the best bicycling tools available for pros as well as amateurs who like to tinker with their bikes. This one is no exception. Got it at a good price right before Thanksgiving. It was cheaper on the website but lack of shipping discount and duration for shipping made me buy here.Performed maintenance on all my bikes' and trainer's gruppos during winter without any hassle. Replaced one of the group sets with a new one too. Easy to remove and install the group sets with this and the "Park Tool SR-12.2 Sprocket Remover". Used my Wera torque wrench to install back the gruppos.Another thing going for Park Tools is the amazing instructions the folks provide on YouTube and the website. While blue is not my color, I will continue to support this American Enterprise.

An upgrade from my old school FR5 without the guide pin, I concluded that it's a lot less faff with a pin v reinstall the skewer, plus it is then practical to use a socket and torque wrench instead of a spanner. Works well and seems to be the usual good quality from Park Tool. Alas I then also then "required" an FR5 with a through axle sized pin too for my turbo trainer but you can never have too many tools in the man cave / lady lair so it's all good, right? The CA Proposition 65 notice on the packaging is a little unclear, does it apply to the materials of the socket itself or the plastic packaging?

The Park Tool FR- 5.2G Cassette Lockring Tool is a professional grade tool. A lock ring tool is a basic tool that should be in your home bike kit. The FR-5.2G is well made & should last a lifetime of use, maybe 2. It constructed of a tough heat treated Tool steel w/12 splines for Shimano, Stan & SunRace cassettes & some dusk brake lock rings by Shimano. It has a diameter of approximately 23.4mm. The 5mm guide pin is designed for use on hollow quick release axils. The guide pin helps to stabilize the tool while your using it. This is really helpful when removing an old, stuck on or rusted cassette. The FR-5.2G can be used w/an adjustable wrench or a 1” (25.4mm) socket. A ratchet cannot connect directly to the FR-5.2G.I used the FR-5.2G when upgrading my Shimano 8sp cassette w/a SunRace 10sp cassette. I previously had been using a FR-5.2 (w/out pin guide) & really appreciate the pin guide.I know there are other cassette tools out there for less, but for something I’ll be using for regular maintenance like cleaning, I believe the little extra expense for Park Tool quality is worth it. Removing & cleaning your cassette is an often overlooked & forgotten bit of bike maintenance. It’s not difficult nor does it take very long to remove & clean your cassette periodically. This will definitely extend the life of not only your cassette but also the rest of your drivetrain.Thank you for taking the time to read my review. I hope it was helpful.

I ordered this for my Giant Sedona Mountain Bike. I needed to remove the freewheel but when I went to insert this into my freewheel it didn't fit. I should have done a little more research before getting this but I'm only out $10 dollars so I'm not worried about it. The tool that did fit was the Park Tool Freewheel Remover FR-1.3This tool, the FR-5.2g, although wasn't the right size, is a high quality made tool. I wouldn't hesitate to buy other tools made by Park. I gave this 4 stars due to the wrong size, that's it.
