Park Tool FR-5.2GT Bicycle Cassette/Disc Brake Lockring Tool with 12mm Guide

Park Tool offers a full range of tools for bicycle cassette lockring removal and installation. The FR-5.2GT fits 12 spline 23.4mm diameter tool fittings - the most common tool fitting found on 7-12 speed bicycle cassette lockrings, including many models made by Shimano, SRAM, SunRace, SunTour, Chris King and others. Also fits Shimano disc brake lockrings with 12 internal splines. Thin wall construction allows use without removal of cones and locknuts. Features a 12mm guide pin to stabilize the tool when used with thru-axle hubs. The 1" hexagonal base can be used in conjunction with a socket, wrench, or bench vise. Heat treated alloy tool steel construction for a lifetime of use.

The FR-5.2GT has 12 splines that are approximately 23.4mm across at the widest point.

PARK TOOL: YOUR GUIDE TO THE WORLD OF CASSETTES & FREEWHEELS

Cassette lockring with arrow denoting counterclockwise rotation

CASSETTE OR FREEWHEEL?

To determine the type of rear sprocket system you have, find the tool fitting on the sprocket set. Spin the sprockets backwards. If the fitting spins with the cogs, it is a cassette system. If the tool fitting does not spin with the cogs, it is a freewheel system.

Campagnolo cassette lockring

CAMPAGNOLO OR NO?

If you have a multi-speed cassette, you need one of two tools. If the cassette, derailleur, or shifter are labeled with Campagnolo, the tool for you is the BBT-5/FR-11. Otherwise, you will require a tool in our FR-5.2 line.

Cassette lockring tool, chain whip and adjustable wrench removing a bicycle cassette lockring

THE RIGHT TOOLS FOR THE JOB

In addition to the correct tool, you will also need a method of driving it (such as an adjustable wrench or 1" socket) as well as a chain whip to hold the cassette in place as you remove the lockring. Park Tool makes a full line of chain whips and wrenches for this very purpose.

Park Tool makes a full line of cassette lockring and freewheel tools to empower you to remove the rear cogs of virtually any bicycle. Here's a selection of tools similar to the FR-5.2GT:

My bike came with center lock brake rotors and one of them was loose. I bought this because I would need it to service my bikes brakes and it works just like it is supposed to.

It is beautiful thing when you use the right tool, it works like a champ, and it comes at a great price. I used this on my Wahoo Kickr Core to install a Shimano cassette.

High quality lockring tool with 12 mm guide pin for proper fit on thru axle hubs. Worked great for removal and installation of my Shimano cassette and will surly work with other brands as well. Pair it up with a 1” socket or wrench for great stability and ease of use. From my experience, ParkTool always provides exceptional value for the money!

I stripped the end millimetre of the knurls off my old FR-5 Park Tool tool. It predates thru axles by 20 years and consequently unless the axle is removed there is only a small section of the tool that engages with the splines in the cassette. I had removed, replaced and tightened the 11 speed Shimano cassette without realising that I'd omitted to include one of the spacers. This meant the tool had even less to engage on, and what little there was stripped as I tried to remove the cassette. The new one arrived quickly and it is purpose built for the job. The removable blue centre guide (It is secured by a small hex bolt) fits perfectly into the thru-axle and the tool engages fully with the cassette's splines; thus the task of loosening and tightening the cassette is easy to do.A modest price to pay for such an essential maintenance tool.

I hadn’t used the tool at the time of writing this review, however, as is typical of Park Tool, it is of high quality and will no doubt work well for a long time.
