Park Tool: Your Guide to the World of Bottom Brackets

Confused by what bottom bracket tool you need? You're not alone. Between all the standards, installation methods, and tool fittings, it can all seem a bit overwhelming. Whatever you do need, Park Tool makes over 40 different tools to aid in the removal and installation of bottom brackets. Here's how to determine the correct tool for you, if you have an threaded or thread-together bottom bracket:

measure bottom bracket specifications standards

Count Splines/Notches

Remove the crank and inspect the bottom bracket shell for tool fittings, which can be notches or indentations on the outer perimeter, splines on the inside perimeter, or pin holes on the face. Count the number of tool fittings on the cup.

measure bottom bracket specifications standards

Measure Diameter

Next use a caliper to measure the diameter or width of the tool fittings. For external notches, simply measure the outer diameter of the bottom bracket cup or adapter. Take the measurement in millimeters.

Used to replace bottom bracket on mountain bike with ease. Park tools are well made and reliable. My son works in a large bike sales/service/repairs wharehouse and they only use Park Tool products. Says it all really. Pay more, get more.

I have not used this on a bottom bracket, but I used it to remove and install Shimano center lock brake rotors on a new set of carbon wheels and it worked flawlessly. I'd never performed this task prior to using this tool, but had no problems at all. Precise and snug fit between the tool and the notches in the rotor lock ring. My only question is why it's also described as a pedal tool. Not sure how it would be used to remove/install pedals.

Metal was too soft to remove very stuck center lock disc brake retainer nut. Since the metal was soft aluminum, and the grip surface was very thin, this tool did not work great. I needed to use a ton of penetrating oil and an overnight soak. Only then I was able to remove the lock nut, still with a lot of force. However, the soft metal tool was damaged in the process. A harder metal, like steel, would be a better choice for this too. Also, a better was to hold grip onto the thin lock nut. PS: Whomever put the nut on before, obviously put it on too tight. I have now put on a replacement (original was damaged during removal), torqued to the proper spec with a torque wrench. This tool was very useful in using my torque wrench.

Splines securely engage the notches on the threaded BSA bottom bracket. I allows removal and installation without marring the BB. Different threaded BSA bottom brackets have different diameters and number of notches, so be sure to get the correct tool for the job. I needed two different ones, one to remove the old BB and one to install the new one.
