I'll be the first to admit that I have not been using this item for the purpose it was intended for. Still, it has worked great for me and is totally worth five stars. For my usage, I wanted to build a delta loop antenna, so I attached a 4:1 balun to the handle using zip-ties. Shoving this into the ground, I could then run the wire around nearby trees or poles to create the triangular loop of wire for making a delta loop. It's worked great, giving my an antenna with astonishing gain increases receiving signals from much further than my end fed half wave. For this, this probe is great. The stiff column is very strong, easily able to hold up the weight of the balun. The tip pushes easily into the soil, getting nice and deep and staying put, meaning I can put tension on the wire without fear of pulling this over. I now keep this in the back of my car for fast deployment, able to set this up quick and easy in any kind of soil. And it's much faster than the fence posts or carbon steel rods I've used previously. Also, being non-conductive, it doesn't interfere with radio signals, providing me with amazing gain every time I've deployed it.So, while I can't speak for how well this would do for cable and pipe detection, it's a great tool for shoving a rod in the ground for support. The spongy handles are comfortable to grip and hold, it pierces the soil deeply and stays put, and the materials are strong and non-conductive. Great for my unusual use here!

This thing broke on the first probe of soil. Handle split allowing the minimal amojnt of glue to fail causing the pole to separate. Same product by other sellers on amazon giving 4.5+ ratings. The 1 ratings were spot on, albeit a little high. I would take any positive rating with a grain of salt.
