The probe is a solid feel soil probe that when put together, feels sturdy and displays little flex. I've probed many soil locations as someone who has worked in construction and as a civil engineer in a geotechnical firm. This probe can be used as a poor man's cone penetration by probing resistance into hard or soft soils; it has a conical tip and is of stout stainless steel. The grooves on the bottom section allows you to check on soil types by extracting small bits of soil on depth removal. Each section is connected to each other solidly. The handles work but may be a little narrow widthwise for my taste. It comes with some gloves but I haven't used them to provide any feedback on those. I'm fairly happy with this probe kit.

The machined edges on the notches at the bottom of this product are razor sharp. I cut my hand while trying to dig mud out of the notches. No wonder they include gloves. Unfortunately, there is no warning on the product or in its instruction manual. If you assume that the gloves are only provided to keep your hand protected as you grab the handle (like I did) then you may also be at risk. Be aware!

This product was perfect for my intended use. I was able to get a good soil sample at the depth I wanted, but you needto do it in step sequence. Bore to just above the intended depth for the sample. Remove the dirt from the drill end and then go to the previous depth and push down to get the sample and pull out carefully. I used the sample to provide a moisture content of the soil for my deep moisture testing guage and establish a baseline for deep root watering for my trees. The drill edges are very sharp, so be careful when you remove the soil from the drill tip. It is also easy to flex the drill rod when you are pushing it into the soil....Go slow and steady, possibly removing a few times and cleaning out before getting to the desired depth. This is a specialty tool that you may not use often, but it is worth the cost.

This is a well-made probe that I don't imagine failing anytime soon. I have found the separate levels of the probe to be useful for detecting how far down the moisture level goes in different areas of the yard.

Will be great for metal detecting trying to find huts in VA. A little on the heavy side but that makes it feel sturdier!

Downhill from my house are two septic fields and a bunch of piping. This tool is good for locating the pipes, of course, but the soil probe tip is good to look for where the effluent from a cracked pipe has migrated underground. The tool is heavy duty stainless steel. This isn’t a cheap rod with a T-handle. This is a very rugged tool with a padded T-handle and segments that allow switching between a probe and a soil collection device. The tool doesn’t flex even when I heave my weight onto it. I’m careful to twist in the direction of tightening the segments, but I don’t think that the segments would easily unscrew after I tightened them with the supplied Allen wrench. All in all a great buy for anyone with some land and a curiosity with what is under the surface.Excellent quality and low price.

This is a solid, well-made soil probe at a great price. I love the option of setting it up short or long.
