This kayak rack is well made and strong .I already used it to carry a 13 1/2 foot 80 lb kayak 30 miles at highway speed and it performed well.It does take time to screw in all the nuts and bolts though , so give yourself about an hour to assemble it .The option to lay it flat came in handy when I parked in an indoor garage .

PROBLEM: If you have fat cross bars on your roof rack, say 1 inch or so, this could be a real problem. The paperwork SAYS these 16 mounting bolts are 80mm long (M8 x 1.25 x 80mm), but they are NOT--they are only 64mm!!. This left me about a half inch short, and unable to attach a lock nut!! Now I wish I had not assembled it all before making this disturbing little discovery, LOL.SOLUTIONS: I purchased locally 16ea 5/16-18x3 carriage bolts plus the elastic stop nuts (about $12). These were ZINC, and NOT fine thread, and NOT stainless, so they may rattle and rust. Were they available, the proper 80mm stainless carriage bolts would have cost me $2.60 EACH, or more than $45 additional. I also discovered that installation was so much easier when I REMOVED the crossbars from the roof rack before installing the boat racks. A deep socket and a ratchet wrench will make quick work of it.OVERALL: the quality of the hardware is otherwise excellent.

I use this to hold a couple of 8ft kayaks I bought from Dicks sporting goods. I've got it mounted to cross rails on my SUV. The included straps and stern/bow lines are very easy to use and I recommend them over the J-hook style ratchet straps I was using from the hardware store. I've made some 1-2hr trips using this and everything was very secure and sturdy. The only thing I dislike is that there's a lot of turning to do to secure the racks on to the bars, but that's just cause I'm lazy. I would absolutely recommend this to a friend.

Great system for the price. The rack system is well designed and sturdy. Regarding accessories: The straps are a plus and work well. The rope system doesnât hold. Handles were used on other kayaks and helped a lot

Works great! Easy to install. Only issue I had was the screws were to long and initially scratched my roof. We cut them down. I found it easiest to assemble them and put them on my car rack 1st with the car rack off of the car. Then I slid the rack rack on with the kayak rack attached.. Worked great.. Easy to take off this way as well when I wanted to go through a car wash! Came with extra accessories.. Including your you're strapped tied down and rope to tie down. And say known. And some kayak handles (if your kayak doesn't already have handles.

Unlike most of the other double J racks on Amazon, these secure to your rack with 4 clamps per rack. Most other racks use 2. In theory this will make them much more secure. The base of this racks is two separate pieces that fit together by sliding one half inside the other. It is secured by a spring loaded press-button mechanism (much like a kayak paddle). The joint is fairly loose, but because both halves securely bolt to your rack this should not be an issue. The racks are slightly narrower than others out there, which should be better for the smaller profile of sea kayaks. They donât have some of the frills found on other Amazon racks - like a pointless built in paddle holder (a plus in my book). They come with a nice set of ratcheting bow and stern lines. The foam padding over the bars is better than most and covers a good portion of the rack. They also come with a pair of ratchet straps - highly recommend you donât use them for securing a kayak. Ratchet straps are for cargo - they can easily generate enough pressure to bend, crush and even cut kayaks in half. Finally, they come with 4 really nice grab handles and four cheaply built nylon loops that have absolutely ZERO use as far as I can tell. Perhaps the manufacturer believes they could be used to help secure the bow and stern lines? The grab handles seriously look like they should have been sold as a jeep accessory and itâs a shame I have no use for them- itâs almost like they were included accidentally. All in all, Iâd rate these as some of the better racks on Amazon, they would be even better if they wouldnât include the extra junk and instead lower the price.
