The portion of these pads that fit over rack crossbars seems to be an attempt at a universal fit. At 1X2 inches they are too big for round bars, but too small for most elliptical or aero bars. I ended up making mine fit OK after 30 mins with a wood rasp to enlarge the slots. I would have usually just returned them, but because shipping took over 2 weeks, and I had a kayak paddle trip soon after they arrived, I decided to try and make them work. Adding up the high cost, poor fit, and slow shipping earns them two stars.

The only thing I did not like was the pad is designed for a rooftop with two-inch flat rails as well as round poles. Because of the flat rail accommodation, I had to use marine calk to keep the pads from slipping around the pull and falling off the kayak trailer. I wish they offered just round pole center cut only pads instead of flat two-inch rooftop rail center cut inside foam pads in combination with a round center cut. The pads just do not grip my round pole well.

For the price of these kayak rack pads, I was hoping for something superior to what I've been using for the last ten years. I was disappointed to find they really weren't much of an improvement at all save for the fact they were new. Shop around, these weren't worth the price.

The trick with these is to trim the opening (where they fit over the crossbars) to make it work with your crossbars. My OEM crossbars are about 2.5" wide. It would have been very difficult (if not impossible) to try to fit these on without trimming some from the opening, which is only about an inch wide. I can see that without doing that the pads would split trying to put them on, since you have to open them so wide. Just take a sharp chef's knife and cut along the opening on both sides to widen it. In my case, I widened it to about 1.75 to 2". The pads go on fairly easily, they stay on, and are easy to remove.

Compress a lot, but stay on the mounting bars. Should be a lot cheaper as it’s just a rubberized foam material.

The curvature of these units conform more closely to the hull of my kayak and thus distribute the weight over a wider area, at least on my kayak (YMMV). The more typical support offers straight cut V shapes with the depth of the V only an inch and a half or so deep.
