I use these fake lily pads in my patio pond over the winter months to help provide a some cover for my fish, help keep the surface ice free during the very cold months and also deter any opportunistic fish thieves (cats, herons, etc). I never add so many that the total surface is covered. Probably about 50/50 so that light and air can still reach the water. These fake lily pads obviously do not look real and have that "man made" green colour but they do the job I want them to do perfectly - and are only in place during the months when I'm not looking at my pond so much so I don't mind how they look. If they get too scummy they are easy enough to rinse off in some clean pond water (although if you scrub them too much the upper surface will wear off). My fish are now used to these being put on the surface of the pond and the lily pads easily move around on the surface when the air-pump and water spitter are flowing (they could easily be linked together with some fishing line and a hole punch and then tethered in place if you wanted them to. They float really well and do not sink at all (even when they pass under the flow of the outlet of my external filtration system). These pads don't seem to interfere with any of my winter plants either as they are so light weight and just skim over any surface floating leaves. They also help to catch some of the autumn and winter debris that can find its way into your pond (leaves from trees blown along on the wind, etc). I leave them in place until the water warms up in Spring-time and I've seen early insects using them as a stop over before flying on elsewhere (maybe they are getting a more manageable drink). Well worth

It's Autumn now here in the UK, and the native pond plants are starting to die back, which reduces the cover the fish use to have, so these artificial Lilly pads are doing a great job of providing cover during the days when the sun is actually out. They do actually float well and no matter how hard I tried I could not get them to sink, so great if you have water features as well. Will also be great during the summer if you don't want plants in your pond, so I would recommend.
