The original smoke detector was installed a few years ago. It did go off a couple times in the past due to dust accumulation. Regular cleaning with gentle compressed air or a vacuum is best. The alarm itself is VERY loud, but appropriately so. Testing is necessary and that’s how we found out this alarm was defective. The battery life is beyond sufficient, with a year+ lifespan. Original install was done by en electrician, but the replacement of the defective one was done easily by my husband.

A nice product BUT...First Alert's site shows this as a "premium" product and the pictures showing the packaging with "wireless interconnectivity." This is NOT true! This does not have wireless interconnectivity. After purchasing and trying to connect some wired and some battery powered devices with no luck, I called their customer service. They confirmed that this device does not have wireless capability. The only device she said has "bridge technology" to transmit a wireless signal from a hardwired device is the SA520B smoke detector. I purchased that product and it worked as she described.The SA520B is hardwired, connects wirelessly to my battery powered devices and also connects hardwired to my other smoke and carbon monoxide detector. This now allows my whole system/all detectors to alert of a single condition and meets my local building code.

Using existing hard wiring from the first alert detectors that I was replacing, these new detectors installed easily and successfully. I think that I had all six rooms changed out within an hour. (Not having to rewrite anything.)The plate on these are designed to work with existing screw fasteners. I only loosened the existing screws and the new plate easily fit. The existing First alert wire connector matched and snapped right in place by hand.Each room has an audio label that you set up by room. It calls out that room as the alarm goes off. And the system test for one room has all the alarms going off together in the other rooms. I wish it allowed custom names or more variety of names, but that may not matter in an emergency.These alarms also tell you the amount of Carbon Monoxide that was detected. I was impressed with that feature.I just installed these and if I haven’t changed this comment, then they must still be working well.

So I think the battery life on these are a bit short but I honestly think it is by design (a conspiracy for good). Need to replace batteries at about 6 to 8 months... which I think is fine because like most people I am NOT checking or testing the units monthly. They all die within a week of each other, so that tells me good quality in the guts. SUPER EASY TO INSTALL, REPLACE BATTERIES AND INSPECT THE UNIT... clean lowish profile design... good value for cost.

When it comes to smoke/CO detector my trust will always be with First Alert/BRK. Our old octagonal-shaped First Alert Smoke/CO detector combo similar the one in this review literally saved me and my family from carbon monoxide poisoning.These latest version Smoke/CO detector combos from this brand seem to be well built and feature filled. It uses Photoelectric sensor for smoke detection, as opposed to the false-alarm prone Ionic sensors. The units I received are fairly new and not old stock. I bought these in April 2022. The manufacturing date stamp is March 2022. The alarm is loud but not ear piercing. It sounds more of a loud buzzer rather than an earsplitting beep. Voice alarm is also a plus and identifies the type of alarm – Smoke or CO. It tells you what it detected and to evacuate! However, for multiple interconnected alarms the voice only activates on the triggering unit. The rest will just sound the buzzer – 4-Beeps for CO, 3-Beeps for Smoke.Installation is fairly straight forward for the DIY savvy. Since these are hardwired, individuals who are not comfortable working on electrical system may need to have these alarms professionally installed. If you’re looking for a hardwired Smoke/CO detector combo that you can trust and have a peace of mind, you won’t go wrong with these First Alert Smoke/CO combo.
