The material is durable. We purchased it to keep out raccoons, and it has worked. The only concern is forgetting to unbuckle when pulling out to the road, but we will get used to it because it is better than cleaning up our yard.

I love the whole seatbelt buckle concept. It's universal and my trash collectors know exactly how to unfasten it without needing to struggle or put any thought into it. It's also nice having the belt attached to the bin. I used a different design for some time — with two big padded hooks on either end. It worked well, but was always left on the ground after the bin was emptied. And one time, I believe it accidentally fell into the truck during the unload because it disappeared. I replaced it with this.

I liked the design and convenience of this trash can lid lock, but that convenience means it is also easy for raccoons or bears or children to open it. The method of tightening and securing the length of the belt is also weak compared to other methods. It's fine to keep out dogs and deer but that's about it. Any lock that opens with a little pressure isn't bear-proof or raccoon-proof or even child-proof. Granted, most trash can locks won't stop a determined bear, but I at least want to keep out the raccoons. I think a ratcheting mechanism would be a little harder for the raccoons to master.

The installation of this trash can lock was very easy if you have the correct tools. You need a drill, a bit that's the same size of the screws and perhaps a wrench if you want to make the nuts/bolts really tight. This is very much like a seat belt so all I did was buckle it and place it against my trash can. I adjusted the belt so it was the size I wanted then with a pencil, outlined the round holes on the ends of the belt onto the trashcan (one on the top and one on the side). I found a drill bit that was the size of the bolt and drilled holes where I had penciled the circles. I then screwed on the ends of the belt onto the top and side of the can. I did use a wrench to hold the nut while I used a ratchet to tighten the bolt. It only took about 10 minutes at most.Fortunately I don't have problems with animals going into the trashcan, but the wind keeps blowing the top open and it drives me crazy. Usually we know if the trash collectors have come because they intentionally leave the top open then we know to go out and retrieve the can. However, with the wind constantly blowing it open, we're not sure if they've come or not - lot's of false alarms. I figure this is a very easy and inexpensive way to resolve that problem as long as the trash collectors don't mind the extra step of pushing the button to release the buckle.

This trash can lock operates like a seatbelt. Everything is included: the metal buckle, the metal latch with long strap, and two nut/bolts with washers. There are no install instructions, but they aren't needed. I used a 3/8" bit to drill holes in the trash can. A 7/16" bit would be better but I don't have that.I mounted the buckle piece on the top, well back from the edge so there would be room for the latch strap to bend around the edge and allow the latch to snap into place. I mounted the latch strap about 8" down the front of the can. This setup works well and, since the latch strap is long, there's plenty of room for the lid to stand partially open with the buckle still latched. That will help when the can is overfilled.Install took 15 minutes or so. I drilled two holes and attached the two pieces to the can. I tightened them with an adjustable wrench and channel lock pliers. The latch is intuitive to operate. Sanitation workers will figure it out in 0.5 seconds. Raccoons will take considerably longer. This small item will make a difference by keeping animals and wind from making a mess of garbage. It's a keeper!

I've been using this type of "seatbelt lock" on my trash can for a few years now. They work amazingly to keep out raccoons. When I had to recently get a second trash toter, there was no doubt that I had to order another strap lock. This one is great quality. It's extremely easy to install and functions well. Since installing it, I've seen racoon footprints on my trash toter, but there's no evidence that they we able to get to the trash inside, proving its effectiveness to me.

I got this trash can lock to deal with raccoons constantly getting into our garbage. Installing it was pretty simple—just drill a couple of small holes in the trash can and attach the lock. It works like a seatbelt buckle, so it’s easy to secure and open without much effort. It’s definitely more convenient than using bungee cords, and it keeps the lid firmly shut. So far, it’s done a good job keeping smaller animals out, but I’m not sure how it would hold up against something larger like a bear. The material feels decent, but not super heavy-duty, so time will tell how durable it is.For the price, it’s a good option if you need a quick fix to stop raccoons and other smaller critters from making a mess. Just don’t expect it to handle extreme situations.
