We have tried a few different trashcan locks (mostly constructed a bungee cords and snap fasteners) that always seemed to let us down. They would either not fasten the lid securely to where animals could get in, or, every time you opened them, they would slip down the body of the trashcan and end up on the ground.This one is rather simple, and, with a substantial trash can, should keep animals out. Since there is only one real point of attachment around the 270° Trashcan opening, there is a chance that small animals could work their way in the lid, especially if your lid has some give to it. Overall, this is working exactly as I’d hoped...easy to adjust and easy to use and replace on the lid, so I’m a happy camper. If I have any longevity issues, I will update my review, but for now, considering price-point...it's a definitely recommend.

This strap does a great job of keeping it trash can lid closed. We were having trouble with raccoons getting into our trash. They would lift the lid and climb inside and proceed to scatter the trash everywhere. I ordered this strap to see it it could prevent them from getting into the container. So far, they have not been able to get into the can or unhook the strap. I have a video camera pointing at it and the racoons are climbing all over it, but have not been able to get the lid open at all. It is actually a bit funny to watch them try to get into the can, but ultimately they fail. If you're having problems with critters getting in your trash cans this is the product you need.
