I am so thankful that we got this test kit. I used it to make sure that the windows were safe to use in a refurbished greenhouse. The test kit differentiated between the windows with a safe paint and the windows without the safe paint easy to use as long as you follow the instructions carefully.

So you get 60 of these lead test swabs in a bottle. I got them mainly to double check that some of my old glazed dinnerware from grandma didn't have a lead glaze, also seemed a good idea to test some of my other crockery that came from foreign sources. The test is pretty easy, run some water on the swab, shake off the excess and then rub on the surface for 30 seconds and look for any color change. Thankfully none of my crockery tested positive, no color change at all. Just as a test, I then swabbed a spool of lead solder. That turned a fairly obvious brown, though not as dark as I was expecting. So these will show you the presence of lead, just not sure how sensitive they are.The color change goes from a mustard color to dark brown. They would be easier to read if they could come up with a version that goes through several different colors like water test strips do, but as it is, they will certainly tell you if lead is there. If you are testing stuff made for food, remember to wash it off when you are done.

This works well on lead house paint and you will get an obvious result. It also detected the lead on a dresser, but it was hard to tell that it turned color until I let the swab sit for a while. In general, all of the color fades with time and the lead house paint result was more obvious when I first swabbed. It turned bright pink.I feel that these will be hard to read if there is only a small amount of lead.If you are just wanting to test your window panes, house and shed paint, etc, then I definitely recommend this. There are a lot of swabs here and it's easy to use. If you are going to test plastics and new dishes, you may not get obvious results. It will probably still detect lead on antique dishes that have a lot of lead.I prefer the swaps that have two vials that need to mix together right before use.

I have a house that was built in 1978, the year that lead-based paint was banned. I have been renovating my house and wondered if any of the oil paint that was used on the baseboards contained lead. I decided to test it and ordered the Sonrasi kit.The Sonrasi Lead Test Kit arrived in a screw-top jar that was plastic shrink-wrapped for protection during shipping. The instructions printed on the jar were very easy to follow.I wet a swab with water, then rubbed it on the oil paint for 30 seconds. The instructions said to check to see if there was any lead by comparing the swab’s color against the color strip printed on the bottle. When first wet with water, the swab was already darker than the lightest end of the color strip and it didn’t change color at all after swabbing my paint. It was similar to the picture in the product listing that I have attached and marked with an arrow showing the color.According to the test, it seems that my paint doesn’t contain lead because it didn't change color. To be sure if the test swab was accurately detecting the presence of lead, I then rubbed it on the post of my car battery. It immediately turned dark rust brown, indicating a heavy lead content. To be sure, I will test again when I am removing the baseboards to be sure any flakes of the old paint don’t contain lead.My only concern is that the wet swab starts with a darker color than the no-lead end of the color strip. Also, there is no guidance as to what color indicates the beginning of a lead percentage that would be of concern.

As you can see in the pic, I tested this on an old window frame that I knew contained lead paint. It turned pink/red on the swab and the surface. Honestly, I just ran it under some light tap water before using it--a lazy alternative that also keeps waste down. I will never be buying those plastic tubes with the glass vials inside that you break again. One thing to note: I realized I should be mindful of where/how I am wetting the swab and what it touches. Sodium Rhodizonate dis not listed as hazardous, but it is also not something anyone is meant to touch/ingest/inhale.

I have some different items I wanted to check for lead content and these Sonrasi test swab absolutely did the job. I lined up my suspicious drinkware and began to swab them, refer to the picture. #1 is an old ceramic I suspected contained lead, #2 and #3 were other antique glasses, #4 was a lead fishing weight (for control) and #5 was another imported ceramic I wanted to test. You can see #4 which was real lead lit up like crazy. Also, sample #1 which I suspected might have been a ceramic with lead in the glaze showed a positive. The other tests I conducted including cut glass and imported ceramics all tested negative. These Sonrasi swabs are the real deal. If you are concerned about lead content in dishes or drinkware, these swabs will easily let you know.

I got this test because I live in a small apartment in an old house and have long wondered if some of the vintage paint on my walls and woodwork may contain lead. Using the swabs, which look like Q-tips, is very easy, you just dip them in water for 2 seconds to activate them, and rub them on the surface you want to test for 30 seconds. My walls did not seem to be producing any strong result so I tried some ceramic items. This little hand painted bird dish soon produced a definite purple color, indicating the presence of a lead glaze. For comparison I am holding a used test swab that I applied to my wall, which remained orange because lead was not present in the wall paint. There are more areas of my home and objects I want to test, and fortunately the test gives me an ample 60 swabs.
