I got these to test random things from this site to make sure they were safe and to help test these for other people to make sure they work. I tested my authentic Stanley cup and it didn't change color at all. I know those are not made of lead. I tested some old metal game pieces I had and they did change color. I'd say they were pretty accurate. I can't know if they're 100% accurate because I don't have an official test but it's a great way to make sure things are safe for you and your kids.

First, I tried these instant lead test swabs on an item I knew did NOT have lead in it, and the swab did not change color. Then I swabbed an item I knew DID have lead (some old fishing line weights) and it turned purple immediately, really fast. Finally, I swabbed three items (old painted ceramic kitchenware) that I didn't know if they had lead or not but suspected one of them did. The item I suspected did contain lead tested negative, and of the other two, one item tested positive and one item did not test positive. At 30 swabs, I think these are a very good value. They are really simple and fast to use, and while they can't tell you how much lead or how high a risk the lead it detects is, they are a great way to quickly find whether or not lead is there. My only complaint is the instructions are written only on the box, in microscopically small text. You'll likely need a magnifier to read the instructions! Other than that, these met my expectations and I do recommend them.

Okay, so I am not sure if these will detect lead in hard surfaced things like glazed ware or glass, but I was able to get these to show lead content in paint. In the photo I uploaded there are two swabs. The swab on the right was used to test an antique beveled glass window, a made in China glass storage jar, a ceramic plate my daughter painted and then fired at one of those art places, and paint that we know to have been applied post 1991. The swab on the left was used on two different colors of paint found in our basement that we believe to be from the late 1800s. As you can see the swab on the right never changed color and the swab on the left got really dark. Great price for a little piece of mind, these do really work.

Easy to use and read. It helped me identify that an iron supplement I was using contained lead despite claims that it was safe! I tried it on old or questionable origin ceramics, paint and other metal dishes - it did not react.Simply dip (half-way) in a little bottled/purified water and rub on the surface for 20 seconds, it will show the reaction quickly. These are durable and uniform, I was able to use each swabs 2+ times each. This pack is a great value and will go a long way.

I tested some lead solder and these tests were positive. Next I tested a painted vent cover and they were negative. These tests were quickly and strongly positive with some old hot wheels on both the metal and the paint. Please note that it seems that a positive test will start to fade/dull in color with time, so pay attention to the results after swabbing. Don’t walk off. It’s possible you might miss a mildly positive result.

Good packaging. The product is sealed in a small ziplock plastic bag, inside a sealed cardboard box. the swabs are a light orange color and do turn darker when I tested on a known lead surface. So they are working as expected. A good value when compared to other products I looked at. The packaging looks new and clean. My only complaint would be that I do not see a manufacturing dat or expiration date anywhere on the box or product. The package states that the shelf life is two years . This is fine if you plan on using them up relatively soon but if you want to use a few and store them you may want to note the date received.

The bag of swabs was not sealed shut when received. The swab tips were already shades of yellow, orange, deep red, brown. As you can see on the box the swabs should arrive yellow and turn reddish brown when detection of lead is present. It was not possible to even test the swabs since they had already turned. These are useless. Don’t waste your money.
