Works great. Red light is useful as I can see it from the house and know it’s still working.

Original review below:So after using it for one season, like many others, mine failed. I initially thought that I was covered under the 3 year warranty. However there are some very annoying caviots to their "warranty". I am required to box and ship it to them at my own expense. And they have up to 30 days to get it. Decide what failed, and if they want to cover it. Then ship it back out. Considering it's winter again I am absolutely not waiting that long. Nor am I paying for shipping on an item that failed under the manufacturer warranty! Horrible customer service and an absolutely terrible system. I plugged back in my old H&K de icer with a $15 farmer's thermo cube to make it turn on and off like the aquascape unit. I would NOT recommend this to anyone planing on using it for more than 1 season.Works great. Has its own thermo shut off. Keeps itself just warm enough to keep a hole open. But not heat the whole 2,500 gallon pond to 65° in the winter. I had SEVERAL H&K 1,500 Watt de icers in the past that were hooked into a farmers thermo cube to shut them off. Between the constant breakdowns and lack of a working internal thermostat this new unit takes the cake. It cost less and works better. Also cost me less in electric because it's much less wattage than the others I have tried. Can't speak for seasonal longevity yet. But with a 3 year warranty, if it does break, I'll get a replacement for free because I registered it.

So this thawed the ice on top of the pond in very cold south west Ontario. I like the light that tells me it is working. The fish - well they were hibernating and now swimming around it like they are at a spa so I am debating if I have to start feeding them again or not because they are so active. That said - the device works well and the light tells you if it is heating or not. I’ve only had it a couple of weeks but so far very pleased.

I purchased this de-icer together with 2 aerators from Aquascape hoping to increase the quality of life for our koi carp and installed the 2 aerators straight away: one gave up after some 48 hours and Amazon said will send a replacement after they receive the defective one. Of course the koi carp are not going to wait some 2 weeks until the Amazon sends a new one so purchased a replacement straight away. This de-icer however was installed just before Christmas when storm Elliott was creating so many problems all over the USA and we thought the fish will be able to survive thanks to the Aquascape de-icer as the ice was over 3 inches thick in our pond. We noticed the light on this de-icer kept changing from red (working) to green (not working) and next day we woke up to see the whole pond covered in thick ice. After failing to make this device work several times, I gave up on it and went to Blaine and purchased a de-icer costing only 1/3 of what this Aquascape cost us which thankfully maintained a constant hole in the ice - even the basic aerator we had from before is still maintaining another hole in the ice now while the Aquascape aerators did not produce anything.Until now I do not know if our very big koi carp survived when the Aquascape de-icer did not work because the ice is so thick - shame on you Aquascape for selling such bad items on Amazon, all made in China!!!!!

We have a koi pond in California and have lost our fish twice, due to cold weather. So we found this and plugged it in. Our temps are dipping into the 30s at night, so this has been turning on and off like a champ whenever the water temp dips below 70. I notice the fish are hanging around under it most of the time. It obviously doesn’t heat the whole pond, and the picture shows it melting ice in a 3 ft circle. But it helps our fish stay warm enough to survive the cold temperatures. Our local fish store had told us there was no such thing and to bring our fish into the house in buckets at night when temperatures go down! Crazy…5-12-23: The light went out a few days ago. Can't tell if it is working or not, but the water temps are fine right now. It's stuck in a bunch of lily pads- I guess they preferred the warm water too. I'll have to pull it out and check it to see if it is still working...

Died after 2 months and now I have to go through a whole process to get a replacement! Aquascape stuff is cheap junk. I’m a professional installer and have had too many problems with the cheapness of their products.

As others here have mentioned, this de-icer has a fundamental design flaw. Neither the original I purchased, nor the replacement that was provided less than two years later, lasted the 3 year warranty.Essentially, as others have described, although the de-icer will work relatively well for a bit, it will eventually start tripping the outdoor GFCI outlet, requiring resets. You can usually get another month or two of use as long as you check it regularly to make sure it's not frozen solid. Eventually though, it will basically trip the outlet instantly, and will be unusable. The seller is refusing to communicate with me further for another replacement and Amazon is unable to help, given that the seller is a third party. Of course, their argument is that it's out of warranty, but this ignores the fact that a replacement device was sent more recently. They even denied the 3 year warranty initially - it took me sending them a photo of the "3 year warranty" CLEARLY written on the box to remind them that this product had a 3 year warranty.I ended up purchasing a Tetra pond de-icer for about half the price and am hoping it will last.As others have said, I would have expected more from this particular AquaScape product and it's certainly made me skeptical of purchasing other products from this particular supplier and manufacturer.

So far so good - much better than the K&H 100 watt I bought last year that sank and let the pond freeze over https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B000637NQU/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1481600292&sr=1-1&pi=SX200_QL40&keywords=pond+de-icer&dpPl=1&dpID=41OOwMRdtFL&ref=plSrch. I love the light on top that tell me it is working. We have had -15c so far and water is wide open can't wait to see how it handles -30c. Built very solid so very impress so far.

Works well, the fish hang around it. It would have been nice to have a lower temperature set point so that it was only on when the air temperature was approaching freezing. The two color blue / red indicator is nice so you know that is powered up and when it is heating. The winter is Newfoundland Canada hasn't started yet so I can't say how it handles heavy snow falls -- last year there was a 10 foot drift over the pond that got saturated with freezing rain and it pushed the ice layer down to the bottom of the pond, killing everything.Update Feb 12, 2016 Unit developed an electrical fault and trips the GFI instantly and is now frozen into the pond.Update March 28: Manufacturer via Big Al's online (amazon vendor) arranged a free replacement. All is well again.

I've had it deployed for the last few days and it works as advertised. The unit I received only has a 1-year limited warranty which is different from what was indicated in previous customer reviews.
