We had a fairly mild February so I had not had an opportunity to test this as a pet water heater. But we had a surprise cold snap last night and when we went out this morning, all the water bowls had a thick layer of ice on top. One of them is a three gallon stainless steel bowl, so we chipped a hole in the ice and put this heater in. I set my timer so I could see how long it took to thaw the water. 11 minutes later the water was totally liquid. I stuck a thermometer in it and was surprised to read that the water near the surface was at 67 degrees. Wow! That was fast. The body of this heater is solid metal and the cord is a heavy gauge and well shielded and plenty long to reach either of the exterior outlets on our deck. I have high hopes that this heater will last for many winters.

Purchased in march of 2024 to finish the season, only a month. Reinstaled it in late Oct or early Nov. Quit working this week. Poor product

This deicer is more suited for large livestock watering tubs than for a birdbath that only holds a couple gallons of water. The water level would have to remain at full constantly or the heater will be exposed. It's too hot for birds to touch and I never saw a bird that wouldn't wade around in the water. This should be in at least a 5 gallon bucket and seems like it could handle a 50 gallon tub with ease. The cord is long, but you still need the water to be close to a GFCI as recommended in the included instructions. They are pretty adamant about not using an extension cord. Heavy duty and well-made. Would be great on a farm.

I don't have livestock that I need to use this for, but I got it to help protect my pipes.I have some outside faucets that are prone to freezing up in cold weather. I live in a part of the US where really cold weather is uncommon. However, we do get a couple of times a year where the temperature will get below freezing and stay for 3 days or more.I've been using various methods to keep the outside faucets warm. When I saw these units pop up in my feed, I decided to get one and give it a try.During our most recent cold snap, I put this unit beside the faucet (on the ground) and covered the entire faucet and heater with a orange bucket from one of the big home improvement stores. I put a moving blanket over that. I had a wireless outdoor thermometer and put the sensor inside the bucket. The temperature stayed well above freezing for the 3 days that we had below freezing temperatures. With my setup, it never dropped below 38 degrees. Please note that I am not endorsing this as a use for this product. This may not be the intended use for this item and someone might yell at me and say that I shouldn't use it for this purpose. However, I'm pretty happy that it worked and I didn't have to do anything except plug the heater in and keep everything protected.Just an alternative suggestion. Thinking outside the box.

This one's on me - I didn't notice how long or short the cord was before I ordered this birdbath heater. I had been looking at several and checked the measurements on each of them, and I must have ordered this by mistake. I have no way of plugging this into an electric outlet outdoors, and I don't want to run this with an extension cord. Don't know if that's safe or not.I did test this in the kitchen sink, and it heats up very quickly and melted my ice, which I froze in a medium-size mixing bowl, in record time. I really think this de-icer and birdbath heater is intended more for farm use instead of with birdbaths, but I don't know. This is well made and worked very fast in my one unsupervised and inadequate test. I wish I had a way to use this or at least test it outside, but that's not possible. I gave this four stars because it does work and it looks so sturdy and durable, like it could melt a cattle tank full of water in five minutes. I'm sure the company doesn't claim it does, but you get my point.I'll keep this handy and will either find a heavy-duty extension cord that meets my qualifications or will find another good home for it when the time is right. I mistakenly ordered this, but I'll put it to good use in a few months.

While this product does what it is described to do and has not had any issues. I am hesitant to use it 1000% of the time as the quality feels cheap and it is waiting to fall apart. The wiring is not as insulated as I would like it to be considering it is outside actively being used by my animals. There have been no issues so far but I do inspect it daily to make sure it is still in working and initial order.

I got this just a few weeks before it wasn't really needed anymore. It's very simple to use and worked well. I didn't have to make special trips out to warm up the goat water.
