This tool worked well to repair stripped threads on a Schwinn IC4 exercise bicycle. The 25-mm crankshaft bolt on this bike is an unusual size, so it was great to be able to repair the threads without removing the crank shaft. I applied oil to the threads and tool first. I threaded the tapping tool from the inner side (the side with the good threads), and turned it by hand. When it became hard to turn, I used a wrench. I backed off the tap and repeated twice more. Then I cleaned out the small amount of metal shavings with a paper towel. I added more oil to the threads and then I was able to reinstall the pedal. [Don't be put off by the comment "this item is frequently returned'. That could be because think they can 'rent' it for free. Not good. ]

Unfortunately I had to return this product due to a lack of quality control. As some have posted, the left handed tap is supposed to have a Chinese marking. Well, the pair I received lacked any markings. Not wanting to damage an already cross-threaded crank, I returned these the following day.The taps appeared to sturdily built. However, the fact they sent me two of the same with no clear communication in English was sorely lacking.

This tap set is great. My wife fell out of her peloton, the pedal coming out and damaging the threads on the right hand side crank. With a little cutting oil, I was able to quickly and easily repair the right hand crank threads. I also used the left side too since everything was already out.Great experience with this product overall!

Peloton pedal broke off. The threads were damaged on right arm. We used this tool to rethread. Started from back side as damage was on front. Worked like a charm! Thank you!!

The price on this is a bargain because it solved it in 10 minutes! My crank is aluminum and pedal threads are steel. Pedal went in crooked about half the depth of the threads and jammed there. It was good for like 20 miles, then a sort of wobble set in. Pedal basically wobbled out. Tried to get the tool in from the «front » but threads were too smashed. Got the idea to go in from the « back » of the crank arm, putting the shank of the tool/ tap in first. Used some 3-in-1 oil and carefully started it in. Since those back threads were good, the tap hand threaded right in. Used an adjustable wrench to push through the smashed threads, and voila, done! Note the tap is about 1/2 » square shank, you need a beefy tap wrench, 12 point closed end or adjustable wrench to turn the tap through the mashed threads. Highly recommended!

These worked perfect and saved me from an expensive right crank replacement on my Peloton bike. I had my right pedal snap off at the crank and when I went to replace the pedals I found that the pedal had been cross-threaded and damaged the internal threads on the crank. Faced with a possibly long wait and expensive visit from a Peloton service tech I thought I would try this first. I was unable to start the tap on the outside of the crank due to the threads being so damaged so I did what one reviewer suggested which was to thread the repair tap in from the back side of the crank where the threads are still good. Worked like a charm. I threaded the tap all the way through until it came out the other side, used some compressed air to clean out the metal shavings and the pedal threaded in easily and in perfect alignment. What a great tool. Just make sure you use the correct tap as there is one for the right side and one for the left side and the markings are not clear. Just start slowly from the back side and there should be little to no resistance until you get to the damaged threads.

Purchased a used Synapse 4 Carbon for a super deal but the crank arms seemed to have been cross threaded and would not allow me to attach my pedals from the front side. I noticed that I could partially thread them in smoothly from the rear and started to wonder if I could ream the threads and found this product was just what I was looking for. It worked beautifully allow me to carefully insert these from the back side of the crank thread after lubricating the threads and screw with a little bit of lubricant and slowly turn them thru the good portion of threads until they reached the buggered part. I then proceeded to turn 1/2 turn in then 1/4 turn out until I was all the way thru the front side. I carefully backed them back out then cleaned the new threads with nylon tooth brush to remove any metal filings then applied some more grease to the pedal threads and to my great joy then screwed in as smooth as butter. I am totally thrilled and satisfied to add these tools to my arsenal. You can tell the difference between the right and left threads by the small mark on one tool. you can also just visually compare them with the direction of threads of your pedal threads. Just be careful to use the right ones, go slow and you will be back in business in no time.

This is a good tap set. The only reason you may not want to tap a new hole is because you need a tapered tap to start the threads, otherwise this tap is sharp and will clean out any 9/16ths threaded hole. This tap set is made in China and my only complaint is that they didn't mark which one is LH and which one is RH. Normally it's on the tap. You have to figure it out on your own.
