Until the prices for other materials come down, I still have to use peat, unfortunately. I can't account for where these were sourced. I'm trying to convince myself that by planting solely for pollinators, I can justify being complicit in depleting the earth of carbon sinks. With all of that said, these little beauties do a great job of fully expanding and stabilizing your your seedlings. For seeds that need a heat mat and light to germinate, you have to make sure you check their moisture every day. These do dry out pretty quickly if you're not paying attention. They resist mold well enough, as long as your seeds germinate in a reasonable amount of time. But if there's a long waiting period and there's no sprout, then just soak them with water from a spray bottle so that they aren't wringing wet and soggy. The mesh is solid enough for transplanting into a pot without breaking apart, too. So, if you're starting a lot of plants, and you can't afford coconut coir in volume, then these pellets are a good way to go.

These make seed starting so easy! Just be sure to carefully pour hot water over them and let them soak in it for a while so that they will expand properly before planting your seeds.

I've ordered these sets of 100 pellets from different sellers and they usually send 97 of them instead of 100, but still the price is a good deal overall and the pellets work as advertised so I am happy with them. 4 out of 5 stars only because they don't put the full 100 pellets that they advertise.

I soaked these pods in hot water for about 10 minutes. They expanded roughly 5x the original length and then they were ready for use. I popped each one in a tray, added seeds, and after just four days, I had sprouts. The pods stayed damp for about 4 days. On day 4, I added more water. I liked that there was virtually no mess and they fit in the tray holes perfectly. I will definitely buy again!

The pellets expand quickly (I used boiling water). They are easy to use and the plants I've started are doing great.

These never disappoint. It may seem silly to buy an additional product just to act as dirt for your seed starts. But what can I say, they just work better than potting soil. I currently have tomatoes, broccoli, lettuce, and herbs as my seed starts. The picture features lettuce sprouts. These stay moist better than regular soil and make for very simple transplant when the time comes. These are the easiest way to start seeds.

First, let me start by pointing out a glaring omission and large problem with the current description of the product: there is NO SIZE SPECIFIED. Jiffy makes this in at least 30mm, 36mm, 42mm, and 50mm varieties. One recent reviewer claims to have received the 30mm version; another the 42mm version. Personally, I received the 36mm version, so I don't know if it's that different sellers offer different, unspecified sizes (I see toolboxsupply, Root.Naturally, and others, some Fulfilled by Amazon, but Amazon itself does not appear to offer these; for the record, I bought from toolboxsupply) or that each shipment regardless of seller is a random, unspecified, size. I would NOT BUY this product from this listing for that reason.Let me state that I have, however, used these pellets for the last couple years with great luck. They are very easy to use: pour warm water on, per the directions, for the pellets to expand, then start seeds per seed instructions. A plastic cover is included (with the flats, not this product here) as a dome for the flats during germination. I have good luck with germination rates, plus it's less messy than working with "loose" seed starting mix. Additionally, because I grow many of my transplants under lights for a period of time, I like that it's very easy to rearrange these, which is harder in peat or plastic flats where they are all stuck together. They're also very easy to transplant without much disturbance, since the netted "lining" around the expanded pellet is easy to remove (some people say they just leave it on, but it doesn't seem to disintegrate by the end of the season and I don't like dealing with it then). The only problem is that if you let seedlings get too big that the roots start poking through the net, it will be difficult to remove without disturbing them.Unfortunately, the kit I was using was the , which accepts 42mm pellets. These 36mm pellets were a bit too small and I was worried they would tip over, so I had to return them. I wasn't even aware that they were so many sizes before this mismatch prompted me to do my research. By the way, the refill part number for the Jiffy 5032 is Jiffy 5777, a 25-pack of 42mm pellets. There is also an Amazon listing that very clearly specifies 42mm. I suspect the 36mm pellets would fit a 36- or 72-plant kit, though perhaps that is the 30mm ones instead (or maybe one for one and another for the other). I think the 50mm ones are just used for the tomato kits. Part of this seems like it would be easy for Jiffy to fix by clearly specifying the sizes on both the trays and the refills, but there is obviously an important problem with this particular product listing in that not only does it not specify, but different buyers seem to be getting different products based on the seller, chance, or some other unknown factor. In summary: these pellets are great, as is the system in general--but don't buy from this particular listing unless you don't actually care what size you get. I'd give the products five stars, but only if you get the right ones. Due to problems with this listing (which does not seem localized to a particular seller and seems to stem from the lack of size specification in the listing), I'm lowering my rating.
