Method:
1 Dampen the cotton thread with water
2 Apply toothpaste or polishing paste on the wet cotton threads
3 Repeatedly polish the hook grooves with the wet cotton thread moistened with toothpaste
4 Sand until the hook grooves are smooth, which prevents damage to the sewing threads

Too dull and the hook rips when pulled back out. I was able to get some working by shaping the tip and fixing the hook with a Dremel then polishing. If you know how to properly shape a hook needle and are willing to do so, then go for it. Out of the box, these are not ready for use they are difficult and damage the material.
