Requires a background table for wood types and ranges of moisture content.Need to carry info or memorise if using infrequently.

I ordered this Wood Moisture Meter so that I could know with more certainty whether or not my pre-washed, pre-prepped deck was ready for staining. Every 12-18 months here in the hot Texas sun, I reapply the same high quality oil-based deck stain to my cedar deck. But some years, it just does not stick the way it does in other years. I finally broke the code. Instead of waiting for a set number of days for the deck to dry, and guessing that it was dry enough for application after that period of time, I needed to use a wood moisture meter that would guarantee the type of dryness I was looking for! This was so easy! This Wood Moisture Meter is easy to use, easy to read, easy to store. The stain I use says that the wood has to have a moisture content of 12% or less prior to application for best results. The first time I used this moisture meter it took my deck 10 days to achieve that kind of moisture content after pre-washing. I have never waited more than 8 days to stain; so I was previously staining too early. After using the Wood Moisture Meter to verify the proper moisture content, the stain went on better than it's ever gone on before. The wood just soaked it up, and the color is gorgeously uniform. I appreciated that I could test all different portions of the deck prior to staining -- the part under cover, the part exposed 24/7 to the elements, the bench -- to ensure that all of it read below 12% moisture before I applied the stain. This tool is going to be very useful for me year after year as I care for my cedar deck.

Very clear instruction manual. This is quite a complex little gadget with many settings which could be confusing to someone but the instructions are very clear and precise. It lists out all the different settings for testing different timbers and materials. Good product.

This is a good product, I would buy it again. I was able to take it out of the box and start using it without having to read instructions - so it is easy to use and intuitive. The only instructions you really need are the enclosed chart that gives wood species and tells you which scale to use. This product had 5 scales vs. other meters I have used in the same price range that only provide 3 scales for different wood species. I also like that this product has temperature included since the moisture content results are impacted by temperature. However, it gave you instructions on how to modify your reading based on changes in temperature - since this is an electronic device, why not program that into the devices so it automatically adjusts for high or low temperature? I docked a half point for that. Also, it appears accurate even though I didn't have a second unit to test against. However, I had some wood that I had a good idea of moisture content for, so the results that gave me confidence in the product. The only issue I had was consistency of reading. Testing on the same place at different times gave me different readings, as much as 1 full percent different. So I docked one half point for that.Overall, this is a good product and I wouldn't expect it to keep up with the $100 units at our wood shop, but it does a great job at this price point and is far better than other units that I've used that sold between $15 and $40. I'd buy this again.

I bought this product to measure moisture content for firewood. The moisture content for firewood should be between 15 and 20% for proper wood stove operation.Observations for this device:-the end cap could be difficult to remove if you try to open it from side to side. But if you hold it in your hands and place two thumbs on the front and push back, from front to rear, it's quite simple. The directions could be a little clearer about this.-The description on Amazon's site says this uses a 9 Volt battery. I almost didn't buy it because of this. I was quite pleased to find it uses 2 AA batteries, which are much more universal.-Operation is clear and simple if you follow the directions-For my purpose (to measure moisture content of mixed firewood), I don't have a specific wood type, and it's impossible to identify each piece of firewood. I tried all 8 scales (A thru H) in the same spot in the same piece of firewood, and the measurements didn't seem to vary much. So I think if I stick to one scale, say "A", I think this will serve my purposes.-Accuarcy: I don't have any way to check accuracy (how close to the true percentage). So I took a known dry piece of wood and measured it with all 8 scales. All the readings were around 10%, ranging from around 8 to 12%. Then I took a small piece of wood that was soaking in water for several hours, and it measured around 35%. That was good enough for my purposes.-Precision (repeatability): As mentioned above, the device seems to yield consistent readings. Certainly good enough for my purposes.-All in all a very nice device that's simple to use-I would ask the manufacturer what the relationship of the scales is, if any, to wood density, moisture, etc. IE do the scales go from A (least dense) up thru H (most dense ? Do the scales, for a given piece of wood, go from A (lowest % to H (highest % ? Is there some other relationship ?
