The direct contact pin probe moisture meter by General Tools, model MMP100, is made in PRC (china). The package for the meter also included two AAA-batteries for use in the meter. The cap of the probe also contains a calibration check for wood mode, and my meter measured 18.2% using the calibration contacts. I have found this meter to give quick, consistent results. I have a more expensive meter that I consider more accurate, but compared to this $15 contact meter, the MMP100 is close enough for the price. This meter has a small pen shape, and fits into hard to get areas easier for me. This meter only measures moisture in wood and drywall. The meter is ready to use once the batteries are put in. This meter has a maximum reading of 50% for wood and 33% for drywall.4 stars

My only gripe is I wish it was rechargeable. That's personal preference though, as some people will value quick changes of the battery. Seems to be accurate from my testing but I do not have another unit to compare. Includes 2 AA batteries.

This is a simple moisture tester. The convenient light up display, switching from green to yellow then red as the moisture increases, makes it quick and easy to read. I can be switched from wood to block as needed. I will be using it mainly for testing firewood while camping and also testing for damp spots on our existing camper and any new camper we look to buy.

For woodworking this is a great tool for checking the moisture content of logs that are being resawed into planks. These planks I cut I can check the moisture content to see that they have dried out and are no longer at risk of warping or cracking. Other uses surprisingly if your shampooing your carpet it works quite well to just stab it down in the carpet to see if the carpet has fully dried. I usually have fans and keep the windows open to help exhaust the moisture out of the house, and this works great for checking the dryness.

This moisture meter is a great value for home use. It has settings for both wood and building materials and seems to work well with both. I don't have anything to benchmark against but the readings are within reason for the materials I tested and it has an accurate reading when testing with the test pad in the tip. Overall, a good value option for wood burning or deck staining.

They give you two extra batteries and a cap to cover it. The batteries go in facing with the tips toward the bottom. The first time I put them in, the whole thing did nothing because I had them in the wrong way.It IS backlit. They include instructions so I made sure to put a ziplock bag with the unit AND the instructions to keep them together.I found the unit wasn't doing much until I pressed hardly against the wood. I went out and it had rained the day before and I tested various wood and it came up with results as expected. It's a nice tool to have around or if you need it specifically for a job. I have lots of water + wood issues.

I initially thought that since I'm not involved in any wood working, and our home has a nice gas fireplace my use case for this moisture meter was going to be mostly under its "building materials" mode. After a crazy snow and rain period, we had some leakage to the crawlspace area form a corner that reached the joists. We took the necessary steps of drying the area and treating the joists for mold. Now, using this tool, I'm able to monitor the dryness and determine if further action is needed... for this particular task, I needed to be in the wood mode, which shows that this functionality is not limited to testing wood to determine if they're ready to burn. In addition, I've used it in drywall and porous concrete blocks to monitor wetness. It works great, the price is right and the size makes it very easy to store and carry it. This might be small potatoes for some outthere, but for a DIY home owner, it's perfect! Highly recommended!

I use this moisture meter primarily for testing how dry my firewood is, and it works perfectly. No more guessing when the wood is ready to burn! It’s also great for checking moisture levels in treated lumber to ensure it’s dry enough before staining or sealing a deck. Additionally, I tested it on concrete, and it worked, though repeated use on hard surfaces may wear down the tips over time. One great feature is the built-in calibration chip inside the cap, which allows you to verify that the meter is reading accurately. Mine was calibrated perfectly—it read 18.3% in wood mode, which is right in the middle of the recommended range of 17.3% to 19.3%. This gives me confidence in its accuracy and reliability. The moisture detection range is quite broad: Wood Mode: Detects moisture from 5% to 50%. Building Material Mode: Detects from 1.5% to 33%.The color-coded display makes it easy to interpret moisture levels at a glance: Wood Mode: 🟢 Green (5% – 11.9%) = Low moisture 🟡 Yellow (12% – 15.9%) = Moderate moisture 🔴 Red (16% – 50%) = High moisture Building Material Mode: 🟢 Green (1.5% – 16.9%) = Low moisture 🟡 Yellow (17% – 19.9%) = Moderate moisture 🔴 Red (20% – 33%) = High moistureThe General brand has always been reliable for me, and this meter is no exception. It comes with two AAA batteries, so it’s ready to use right out of the box. The bright display is easy to read, and operation is super simple—just two buttons: one to turn it on and one to switch material types.⚠️ Caution: The prongs are very sharp, so be careful when handling them! Fortunately, it comes with rubber protective covers and a plastic cap attached to a shock cord to keep them safe when not in use.At just $20, this is an awesome buy! You get an accurate, easy-to-use moisture meter that works on a variety of materials and helps take the guesswork out of drying times. If you burn firewood, work with lumber, or need to check moisture levels in building materials, this tool is a must-have. Highly recommend!
