This is super handy for hobbyist small wiring jobs, remote control, drones, 3d printers, stuff like that. As long as you don't need to tackle too large of a wire it's great, just don't expect a 12w soldering iron to solder 0 gauge wire, it simply doesn't have the heat output for that. Love that it charges via usb-c pd as well. It's hard to get across in a review but not having a cable on the back really improves the experience for me when soldering, makes it much more enjoyable for me.

Nice for when you need to solder where there is no power. Using for automotive work in tight spaces where corded iron whould be clumsy!

If you have done much work with corded soldering irons, you know how inconvenient bulky cords can be. While sacrificing a little due to battery life, this cordless unit makes small or quick jobs more convenient.

I really liked the idea of a portable soldering iron. I got this little Weller battery powered unit. I tested it. It works nicely. It’s a 12 watt unit, so more for electronics than electrical work. It recharges with a USB port. It has a little LED work light, and two LEDs, a green one to tell you it’s heating, and a red when it’s ready to solder. However, it has a major flaw. One thing you don’t want is something in your tool box or on your workbench heating to 950 degrees unintentionally, and that’s how hot soldering irons get, easily hot enough to start a fire. Unfortunately, only one switch has to be moved to turn it on and heat it. Now, they did sort of think of this. If you put the cover on the iron the switch to turn it on can’t be moved to the on position. However, this cover is only friction fit. There’s no locking mechanism. It can be removed fairly easily, even bumped off. The only way I can figure to make this thing safe between uses is to remove the actual soldering tip, which, rather interestingly, is also just friction fit instead of screwing on, which makes it feel fairly cheap. It doesn’t even come with a case, so there’s a chance the removed tip will get separated from the iron. All in all I can’t recommend it.

This new model with the "N" at the end of the model number has a couple upgrades from the old version. First one which is a nice one is that you can use an actual USB-C / PD charger, where the old one only worked on the large USB-A charger. The Second is a change in the plastic molding in the rear they made a flat area to reduce roll, which it does help but it would be better if the flat area was on the front larger ring. Because it still has a tendency to want to roll.Still a couple things I don't like is that the iron gets very hot and tends to oxidize quickly. So tip tinner will become your best friend. The charge rate is only 10 watts and the output is 12 watts, so technically you the charge rate can't keep up with the usage and it will eventually run out of batteries even if plugged in. This is only an issue if your doing a lot of soldering. It does good on small wiring jobs but once you get to the larger gauges such as 12 gauge it runs out of watts and just can't solder it. There is not enough wattage to keep the heat up it quickly gets sucked away in the wire.

I have used a great variety of soldering irons over the last 30+ years, which is precisely why it takes A LOT to impress me! Interestingly enough, many of my favorite soldering irons were not name brand products, but Weller is generally an industry name that you could trust. The last cordless soldering iron that I had tried would not even tin properly. It simply had too many issues to be a viable option. This is why I wanted to give this Weller a try. I really did not have a good battery powered soldering iron that I could use in a pinch. That said, I am extremely happy that I gave this particular soldering iron a shot as we were without power for six days when Hurricane Milton hit us here in Central Florida! There were points that I had to get extremely creative with anything that could be used as a backup battery and fortunately this soldering iron even arrived with an ample bit of power! The timing couldn’t have been any better!Other than this model actually working as one would expect, there were certain things that definitely caught my attention! A great example is just how fast it heats up. For being just 12W, it puts out a good amount of heat, but more importantly it also doesn’t quickly drain the battery while doing so. This is an excellent balance that one would want with a quality cordless soldering iron. I also thought that it’s just very well designed. The cover extends to ensure that you cannot accidentally turn it on. It has a builtin safety rest. It’s ergonomic and actually feels good in the hand, which says a lot as I usually only use small pen-like soldering irons for most tasks. Now, you may prefer other things about this particular product, but it proved its effectiveness to me when I really needed it. Although the LED light was not extremely bright, it was usable and the medium amount of power that it draws means more battery life to actually solder! There’s really nothing negative that I could say about this item. The bottomline is that this is an outstanding product and I unequivocally recommend it!
