This is a 100V item, and should NOT be sold in the USA!!!!!!!!!!!!! According to Hakko themselves: "While it is possible to plug a 100V FR-301 in a 120V outlet, a step-down transformer should be used. We do not recommend this however since these 100V units are designed for the Japanese domestic market. Connecting the units to 120V will cause an overvoltage on the PCB and the heating element that could lead to premature failure. The units are also not rated for safety to UL standards in North America. If a problem were to occur with the unit, you will need to return the unit to the place of purchase as we are unable to repair it."

This thing is AWESOME, should have bought it years ago. Do not be concerned about it being a grey market version, it is genuine. Comes with a non-polarized 2 prong US cord instead of the 3-prong US cord. Saves you $100 not having that 3 prong cord, works perfectly, temp regulation works perfectly. Should have bought this thing years ago.

I have a big project that will involve a lot of de-soldering. There was a huge difference in price between different brands. The Hakko was the most expensive but had very good reviews. I have found that you get what you pay for. This is a perfect example of that statement. If you have a project that must be done well this is the de-soldering tool you need.

Was working on an older board and needed to change a few components. The handheld solder suckers and wick just weren't cutting it. I spent 2 hours trying to lift a pin from a large ground plane and wasn't getting anywhere. Queue this tool, reflow all the pins, and they came out cleaner and so much faster than I was going before. Literally 3-4 hours saved on this job, and I'll wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone doing any amount of rework.

This is the 100V Japanese version with a standard USA 2 prong AC plug. If you have a Variac you can obviously set it to 100V and use without issue. After looking inside and testing, it will run "without issue" using 120V, see disclaimer below. It does not come "used", the standard practice for irons is to put solder on the tip before putting in storage to prevent oxidation.Based on the manual there are 2 major heating element part classes, 100V-127V (35 Ohms) and 220V-240V (160 Ohms). This one obviously has the 100V-127V heater. The only confusing thing about this is the OEM replacement parts list for the heater has individual SKUs for 100-110V, 120V, 127V, 220V.The the other main part is the heater temperature sensor but it is spec'd for 100V-220V so this shouldn't be a problem for using with 120V. The important point is since the heater is temperature controlled along with an available calibration potentiometer, the difference between 100V and 120V is just the duty cycle, time on in order to maintain set temperature. Because of this I don't believe there is any harm done when supplied with 120V.The major caveat is that the vacuum motor RPM does scale with the AC voltage. It's not a lot but you can audibly hear the difference even between 100V vs. 110V, it's a higher RPM. I can't say for certain but it could shorten the motor's life but it might not matter in grand scheme of its lifespan. The flip side is you're getting a little more suction, not that it really needs it.The "power supply" PCB is the "same" board across 100V-220V units with the critical difference being 1 or 2 power resistors and their values. Hakko sells the 120V PCB for an affordable amount so any DIYers could attempt to swap it if desired. The AC cord and motor connection are through-hole soldered while the heater is connectorized.Overall the unit is really nice and Hakko does a great job offering replacement parts for basically everything inside. The only negative thing I'll say about it is the power cord is kind of springy and slippery, however it's not too hard to swap it with a new one if you wanted.

I've purchased the tool twice. The first time I loved it, but I sold it when I needed the money and thought I couldn't justify keeping it. I can now justify it, but the second time I purchased it I was sent the Japanese model, which comes with Japanese instructions and a 100v electrical requirement. Without purchasing a transformer, it is not safe to use.As far as the operation goes, it's a pretty great tool. It's convenient to be a self-contained unit, albeit slightly heavy. It can be a bit difficult to clean, but much better than most solder suckers. It worked incredibly well at desoldering everything I threw at it, but you will eventually need to purchase a few extra tips for different components.

Purchased this 2 weeks ago and arrived with US plug. Contacted Amazon to advise them the unit has incorrect plug (was USA). They advised me to get an adaptor for AUS to US and it will work ok. I purchased and adaptor and today plugged it in. The tip started to heat a bit then went cold and motor was screaming. The label only has 100V stamped on it, I am now sure they have supplied an incompatible unit for use in Australia. Hopefully now they can swap it over for AUS version that actually works on our mains and has correct plug.

I've used a fairly cheap Aoyue desoldering station for quite a while and it never worked very well and it was always a PITA to clean. The gun is rather crudely designed and manufactured. But I digress. I've been on a recent mission to upgrade my electronics bench to Hakko products. I have a Hakko FX-951 (fantastic) a genuine Hakko FG-100 and now this Hakko FR-301.I was amazed how well the FR-301 sucked up the solder - one or two seconds at medium heat on a small land or through-hole and the solder was gone. What I like:Performance is great! Well designed and made, solder capture is great, cleaning is easy. Not so great:Its bulk - a bit on the heavy side but since it has a built-in vacuum pump that's to be expected. The recessed "on" button is in a bit of a strange place on the rear of the handle and not real easy to push in far enough to turn on. The control for temperature is at the very bottom of the handle - I always have to turn the whole thing upside down to see where the dial is set. As others have mentioned the included bent metal "stand" is an absolute joke. It is completely unsuitable for its intended use. Buy another stand. I bought a Hakko 633 stand and bent the holder up a bit and the gun is a perfect fit.Bottom line:Very happy with my purchase and highly recommend it.
