Just starting using this awesome lens that's specifically designed for Nikon. Photo color amazing, very sharp, auto/manual focusing a breeze. Last but far from least, it looks very cool. Can't wait for our breathtaking fall/winter sunsets and family gatherings over the holidays. Price is very reasonable for this high-quality lens. Good luck!

I purchased this lens specifically for landscape (wide-field) astrophotography (e.g. Milky Way with landscape foreground) and I imagine that a lot of people are looking at this lens for the same reason. With landacape astro a fast lens (aperture of f/2.8 or bigger) is essential if you are shooting without a star tracker. Bigger apertures allow you to reduce your shutter speed and and (hopefully) avoid coma (elongation of the stars due to earth's movement). The Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 and 24mm f/1.4 in manual focus (because autofocus doesn't work well with stars) are what you commonly see recommended for landscape astro on a budget. And both of those are wonderful lenses. However, I have both lenses and recently the 14mm (which is, admittedly F mount) has been staying in the bag.The primary reason is the speed of the Viltrox. My usual choice was the 14mm because it gives me a little extra latitude in my composition and with a Nikon Z7II, f/2.8 was fast enough to get me around a 20 sec. exposure at ISO 4000 without any significant center frame coma and manageable noise. However, there was still some coma in the corners (for the pixel peepers out there). Using the 16mm I did lose some width, but not enough to compromise my "looser" framing and more importantly, I gained one and a third stops of light. Going to f/1.8 allowed me to drop my shutter speed to 13 sec at the same ISO and in astro every second counts. At 13 sec. coma is simply not an issue. I haven't used the Viltrox much in non-astro situations, but I think that extra light will be a tremendous asset in other low light situations. So in the end, why get this?- Is the image quality significantly better than the Rokinon--probably not.- Is the price significantly better than the Rokinon--yes, but that's for the MF version. The AF version is around the same BUT it doesn't come in a Z mount, only F mount which means you have to break out the FTZ.- What about the build quality--they're about the same. I'd give a slight edge to the Viltrox, but I haven't used the MF Z version of the Rokinon. Neither are flagship quality, but both are well above OEM plastic kit quality lenses.- How about that nifty LCD window on the lens--it's neat but it not necessarily accurate to the point that I would rely on it for a repeatable focus distance.- Buttons. The Viltrox has 2 user programmable buttons on the lens.In the end, while there are similarities between this and the Rokinon, as a Z user I went for the Viltrox because 1) it has AF; 2) it is in native Z mount; 3) it is faster and 4) it has 2 user programmable buttons.Based on this lens, it looks like Viltrox is serious about grabbing a piece of the third party Z lens pie. I'll be keeping an eye on them, for sure.

My wife bought me the Viltrox 85mm 1.8f lens over a year ago for my birthday. Until then I had never heard of the brand, but the build quality was excellent and images are tack sharp. Then when I found out the cost of the lens I was blown away.So when word and reviews came out about this lens and its price point I snatched it up and I wasn’t disappointed in any way.Build quality is superb. Ring actions are smooth. Responsive auto focus at depth. Weather sealing looks effective (living in Thailand and it’s rainy season this is a must). Its price is more than the 85mm I own but still a fraction compared to the Nikkor/Sigma brands and still well below the Tamron. This is money well spent.

This lens does take good pictures when it works. Nice wide open for 16mm full-frame Nikon Z5. It was working well overall. However, after some time the camera had a hard time reading the lens aperture and would not allow the lens to be used. It froze my camera. I have not had any issues with any other non-Nikon lenses. I am wondering if it was a problem with the Lens CPU connections. It felt like it locked in the o-ring well. I cleaned the connection points. I could get it to work after several cycles of turning my camera on and off. But that caused me to miss several great shots having to fight with the lens. I have returned the lens and went with the Flagship Nikon Z 20mm F1.8. I would like to give this lens another go if I had the funds. It did take some great crisp shots. Vignetting was somewhat of a problem but not hard to correct post-processing. The image attached was taken with the 16mm Viltrox z mount lens @ F1.8 13-second exposure with 2500 ISO. The image is copyrighted. If you can grab a copy that doesn't have the same problem I did it would be a good choice If I knew it would be stable.

Caught the 10/10/24 Aurora event (based in AK) first night using this and the images are great! Ever so slight vignette in 2 corners when shooting with my Z6ii, but nothing LR can’t adjust or crop. Stars are crisp, and the construction is solid. Love the focus lock, and while it is a little heavier than some of my other wide-angle lenses, it feels like good solid quality. Definitely my new go-to lens for nighttime photography!
