1. Why can't the enclosure reach 20Gbps?

This M.2 enclosure can only reach up to 20Gbps transfer speeds with USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20Gbps) ports. Other ports including Thunderbolt 3 and Thunderbolt 4 can only run 10Gbps at max due to the limitation on data communication protocols.

2. Can this M2 enclosure support 20Gbps with MacBook?

No, the item can only reach 10Gbps on MacBooks since MacBooks generally have Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4 ports, which do not support 20Gbps when negotiated with the enclosure.

This m.2 nvme adapter is very easy to make into a portable external hard drive. The materials feel very sturdy since it's metal. It is lightweight and also has silicone on it for protection. Installation was very easy.

I have several of the UGreen 10Gbps enclosures, and they work great. This one, which is identical in appearance and costs more, is actually slower. I tested it with a 40 Gbps USB-C port and a 40 Gbps cable transferring a series of large files. I observed some brief transfers of 1 GBps or greater, and then prolonged speed crashes that negated any gain. The older 10 Gbps model was much more consistent at around 670 Gbps and would exhibit an overall speed advantage using the same SSD.

I really like this enclosure. High quality workmanship, easy instalation. The gray rubberized cover over the metal body gives it a nice contraast. I am very pleased with UGreen!

If you need a quick and budget solution (or if it's your first time buying an SSD enclosure like me), this 20Gbps enclosure is for you. The only problem is how to achieve 20Gbps - it's through USB 3.2 Gen2 x2. Most PC motherboards don't really support that and MacBooks, or Apple products in general, do not support that protocol at all. Most PC motherboards out there would support up to USB 3.2 Gen 2, while MacBooks support USB4/Thunderbolt 4 - if you wanted to know what this says on an Apple computer when you connect it, it would say USB 3.1.Because the max speed is in a kind of a no man's land, you only get about 980 Mb/s to 1001 Mb/s on Windows. You can get 1200-1400 Mb/s on MacBooks - most of the times you get the same speed as on Windows.Another problem I would like to add is of SSD recognition - Samsung Magician does not play nice with this. The software will not recognize your Samsung SSD in this enclosure - from the serial number, firmware, and protocol. Therefore, you cannot update the firmware on your drives without physically moving the SSD into a PCIe slot. However, your SSD will be recognized in Disk Utility (Mac), or Device Management (Windows).Sorry to tack on the problems, but do not think of using this as a boot device. You will get the 'inaccessible boot device' error. In the end, should you buy it? Yes, it's a quick solution to more storage, and 1GB/s is more than fast enough for most people. Another quick disclaimer, make sure you keep the USB cable that comes with this. Any other cable can either not power this, or severely ruin the transfer speeds.

I tried a few brands that were available primarily to clone and upgrade the SSD in my laptop. I had Western Digital Black and Samsung EVO 970 drives. Most of these enclosures have a Realtek chip that makes the M.2 appear as a SCSI drive, which means you can’t use the Western Digital version of Acronis to clone the drive as it does not recognize the SCSI emulated disk as WD. To be honest, I forget if this one worked with WD or not, but once I got an enclose that Acronis recognized I started the clone process that was very fast. However half way through Acronis blue screened, windows rebooted into Repair mode (without asking permission) and then to my horror the system wouldn’t reboot and windows reported it couldn’t repair my source drive! I checked from the repairs rescue contact prompt and C: was gone. Thank God for Chat GPT that suggested some commands to run which rebuild and then repaired my C: drive, it reported corruptions in just 3 files, all thankfully unwanted video files. I tried again and exactly the same thing happened at the same point. In the past I’ve had great results using Samsung SSD’s so I switched to that and Samsung Magician swiftly completed the clone perfectly. The enclosure didn’t even get warm to the touch, despite the intensive cloning. It had a clamshell type lid which is superior to the sliding design of several other enclosures and the extra size of the lid and fins make s huge difference. Very happy. The WD got hot in other enclosures, but this Samsung SSD lowered the temperature of my laptop drive from typically 55 degrees down to 39. So even though the WD has a slight edge on performance, it comes at the cost of extra heat and maybe long term reliability. It’s not quite tool free, and the supporting screw takes a few seconds to figure out (the SSD is supported by the groove in the screw head, the instructions can leave you thinking it screws down in the SSD board). This enclosure worked as fast as my 3 year old Dell Precision Thunderbolt ports could go, but if you have the latest Thunderbolt 5 ports, you can get an enclosure that will go faster. However, for my needs , cloning 2TB in about 30 mins is much faster than I feared it might be.

I actually tried 6 or 7 enclosures (Mediasonic, GiGimundo x2, SSK x2, Viagkiki) before keeping this one. Most did not provide the advertised speed and/or ran very hot. Not this one. Dependable speeds while keeping the drive cool. The LED is on the side and large making it very easy to see. The silicone skin is nice and adds a bit of shock protection I did not have before, but does not add heat. Seriously, spend the extra $!0 and save yourself needing to replace your $200 drive.
