My old powder turned purple/black and became a rock after years of storage, so I replaced the chemicals. This powder is closer to a fine white sugar and very easy to scoop. Both containers are well designed - the powder container is crisp to use and the liquid container makes it easy to apply drops one by one. Otherwise it's the same old chemicals from Taylor. Haven't found anything better so far.

This is the go-to method of checking chlorine levels in pool water for professionals and those "who know". Simple, accurate, fairly quick and cost effective. I've been using these items for years and fully trust them. Nothing else I've tried comes close regardless of cost. Keep the powder sealed and indoors and it can work properly for years. If the white powder turns grey it is compromised and should be replaced.

I've tried to be lazy and use the quick strips to test my pool chemistry, but I've never found any brand to be accurate for testing free chlorine. The FAS-DPD color titration test is just the only way to go. Chlorine is expensive and if you run out of it after super-shocking your pool trying to get the test strips to show that there's more than a tiny bit, you'll end up a green pool and then a clogged up filter, and maybe too much cyanuric acid depending on what shock you were using and your pool is just going to keep sucking cash. As soon as I went back to this test, I have been managing my chlorine usage better and the pool and filter are needing a lot less maintenance.

Use this to monitor the chlorine in my pool. great product. accurate to .5. super easy to use. gives you the ability to measure higher chlorine levels. strips are horrible and top out around 5. if your pool is higher then that, your just guessing. This product gives you accurate measurements.

This kit comes with the powder and the small spoon required to measure the powder. I have used other more expensive brands and I have used them together. The Taylor reagent works as well as the more expensive brand. The reason to use this powder in your pool is so you can measure you chlorine levels to a 1 ppm. If you keep having algae blooms and you keep getting your pool clean and get another boom try this. Remove all automatic chemical equipment so there are no new chemicals added during this test. Measure your chlorine levels at night right when the sun sets and at least 30 minutes after adding any chemicals. In the morning before the sun comes up measure the chlorine level again. Compare the two measurements. If the free chlorine level drops more than 1 ppm between the two you have some sort of organic material using your chlorine. If your pool looks really clean and you cannot pass this test most likely you have algae growing in your light niche. Pull your light out and clean that niche out or take a relatively high pressure hose and spray water into the edge of your light from the top and see if algae comes out the bottom if it does keep rinsing until no more comes out. Clean what comes out off the bottom of the pool and run the test again the next night. If all your other pool chemical readings are good and you get any organic material issues fixed your water will shine.

This item is advertised as "over 100 tests" - I use slightly over one scoop of the R-0870 (the test instructions indicates 2 scoops) and it is almost gone, yet I have 3/4 of the bottle of the Reagent. I am "slamming my pool" and often use 40 drops on each FAS/DPD test, so I don't understand the disproportion of the powder to the reagent. I now have to purchase another powder. I will be contacting Taylor regarding this issue.I have re-rated the product as 4 stars. I did contact Taylor and the rep said she'd check with the tech and call me back. Wow - in a few hours I did receive a call back! It was explained that two level scoops should be used and depending on the number of drops added - that would account for what I thought was disproportionate amount. In other words, weekly testing might take 8 drops, but during a slam - 40 drops every few hours would definitely affect the amount needed. My error and happy that Taylor is so responsive to its customers.Well - it's a few days later and I had ordered the same product again - this time, the R-0870 container was at least twice the quantity as the original purchase - hmmm, guess there is a quality control issue on the amount of powder. I placed the empty bottle on my scale and it registered at 14 grams. The new "full container" registered at 24 grams - exactly what I purchased. So, if you receive a bottle and the quantity (by eyeballing it) is not above the words "DPD POWDER" (mine appears closer to the "I size: 10g) then you did not receive the right amount. I recall my first container being less than 1/4 full! This is not any reflection on the seller - it clearly is a Taylor issue! But ... Taylor will not address any product not sold directly by them! Hope this is helpful!
