I got 2 of the 317 GPH ones and they are not lying about how much water these move! I got them for an undergravel filter in a 55 gallon tank and once I turned them on I immediately realized that I needed to do some modifications.I removed the smaller hole that is in the main nuzzle to reduce the pressure but it was still to much.On the bottom of the device the water intake has three different size slotted rings. I found that if cover the bottom two rings with plastic, wrap it with a rubber band, then trim off the excess plastic so that only the top slots can intake water, I can reduce the flow to a better amount for my 55 gallon tank. This modification gives the ability to control how much water is moved. The more holes you cover the less water is moves. The powerheads were noisy, but on a very close inspection I found that the part that has the suction cups on it has 2 plastic flanges that make contact with the glass. Those flanges make a loud vibration. I shaved the flanges off completely with a utility knife and that reduced the noise dramatically. They still make a hum and thry're still a bit on the loud side, but its just enough to notice it. Which is fine with me.They are strong and cheap powerheads. If you're handy and can take the time to modify them you will save yourself some money. If you don't care about saving money get an AquaClear powerhead. They are practically silent and have variable speeds, but they are expensive.

I got these for an under gravel filter in my 55. They seem to produce plenty of current, but have two small problems. First, they produce a great deal of vibration, which translates into noise, both of themselves and also of the two filters I have hanging in the back of the tank. I bit of securing the powerheads and the noise is greatly reduced. The second problem concerns the other discharge port; the stopper that blocks it popped out as soon as I plugged in one of the units and refuses to stay put when replaced. Other that that, good packaging, good price, good performance, so good deal.

While powerful, the input connection on the bottom and the output nozzle on the side leave much to be desired. I suppose that this powerhead is designed to "submersible only" and you're only supposed to suck water up through the flimsy poorly made stepped cage at the bottom. You cannot connect any hoses to the bottom without modification. So if you think you're going to run tubing to it from somewhere in the tank, you're going to have to modify it - or be prepared to run 1" diameter tubing. The cage covering the intake is total crap. It arrived broken. It's super flimsy. The output nozzle, on the side, is not tapered in any way. Im not sure what the outside diameter is, but your standard tubing isn't going to fit snugly inside or outside of it - at least mine doesn't. It comes with about 3' of corrugated tubing that is super thin and doesn't fit on the outside of the nozzle. Nor for that matter does it really fit on the inside of the nozzle. I had to crumple it a little - like putting one straw inside of another straw - but since there were no instructions, I can't tell if this is how you're supposed to use the hose. This tube is garbage. On the side of the output nozzle is a hollow peg where you can attach an air line in order to aerate the output - a nice feature, but it's positioning is weird and once you've hooked up an airline it's impossible to hide the airline or even easily follow the power cord out of the tank.In spite of the complaints I have, it's still a good powerhead so far. It's been running since I got it hooked up to my DIY gravel filtration system. I'll update if things go south.
