I'm a historian, so I spend a fair amount of time in old cemeteries. I ordered this to use to see if there is a fallen stone that has become covered with dirt and grass, which, happens more often than you'd think. Perpetual care doesn't mean resetting a stone. It means mowing the grass. This device works very well for my purpose.

Not a fan. I can't use it without it unscrewing itself and there are too many short parts to keep up with. I Dont want to use pliers on it so I will try Teflon tape on the threads before I put sharp nicks in the shaft. Going back to old trusty solid fiberglass with metal tip

I’ve purchased several of these over the years,. This one worked great. Comes in four separate pieces. Very, very easy to assemble. Just be careful to remember not to turn the probe the wrong way as you’re putting it in the ground or to my in advertently unscrew the pieces.

This is one handy tool to have around. It arrived unassembled in a small box. I opened and used it immediately. It is easy to screw the sections together by hand. You can use either one or two sections depending on how high you want it off the ground. I use both sections so not much back bending and no kneeling is needed. I used it today to probe for gopher tunnels. It worked well and "punched through" when it found a tunnel. The metal is also thick enough that you can wobble it around a bit to enlarge a probe hole, depending on the type of soil. As with many threaded rods, there is a tendency for some of the sections to loosen while in use, which I don't like. I may have to add some type of rubber cement or non-permanent liquid hold to the threads to make the joints stay together.

This soil probe rod is a versatile and effective tool designed for locating gopher tunnels, septic tanks, underground pipes, and more. Although the product description suggests it can be used to locate underground water lines, I would not recommend this, as the sharp tip could puncture a pipe and cause leakage. I am using this soil probe to locate underground gopher runs on our sandy property. It is a significant upgrade from the piece of rusty, ½-inch rebar I’ve been using and makes it much easier to locate gopher tunnels. The tip of the probe is sharp enough to penetrate various soil types, and the T-handle design allows for leveraging body weight to push the probe through compacted soil without much effort. It also provides a comfortable grip and minimizes back strain. This tool is easy to clean—I simply wipe it off with a clean rag or paper towel. Made of stainless steel, it should maintain its appearance and functionality for quite some time. The length of the rod allows for soil probing without having to stoop over. It can be adjusted from 32 to 48 inches in length, depending on user preference. However, this convenience is also a drawback. The shaft consists of several sections that screw together, and the joints tend to work loose after a few uses. Having to stop and retighten the joints often isn’t a dealbreaker, but it does detract from the tool's utility. Even so, its overall effectiveness and ease of use make it a worthwhile addition to any gardener or homeowner’s toolkit, especially if you live in a place with sandy soil and lots of gophers.

We used to have a home on adobe soil (Sonoma County, north of San Francisco) and never had any real gopher trouble 'cuz it's so dense it's hard for the little critters to make their way through it. Then we built a home on a piece of property with "sandy loam" soil - mainly because I wanted to be able to be able to work with the soil (put in fence posts, plant a garden, etc). Come to find out that the gophers and moles LOVE sandy loam - it's almost like they swim through it, it's so nice and loose. That meant setting traps, and before you can effectively set traps, you have to be able to find their runs. That's where this probe rod is already proving very handy. It consists of three sections and a handle, that you can combine to make the length rod you want. I've found that most of the time I don't need all three rod sections, that two of them will get me as far down in the ground as I need to go for the deeper gopher runs. I suppose that third section could come in handy for locating septic tank inputs and outputs if I need to, but I'm not anticipating that at this point. Construction quality is fine - the t-weld at the handle appears properly executed and strong enough for this setup. The probe rods themselves are thin enough that as long as you get them screwed together tightly, it's no problem pushing it all down most of the length of the two or three sections I put on there. One thing I did notice is that it's not difficult to accidentally have rod sections unscrew a bit and get a little loose. Fortunately, the double ended screws that hold them together have an allen wrench socket on one end (see photo). These screws have a preset limit on how far you can thread them into a rod section, so if you take the appropriate allen wrench (not included) and snug that bolt in there firmly, the rod will be much less likely to come loose. Now to start setting traps.

This is a lightweight, yet sturdy probe that's quite practical and easy to use. It comes in pieces and can be stored like that for easy storage. You can also adjust it to the height you need for each job. But just screw them together, and it's a rather solid pole. The handle part is solid and comfortable to grip. With a sharp edge, it drives into soil pretty easily. I was skeptical if this would go in at first, but it quite easily drove down, and should be super useful whether you're looking for gopher holes, septic tanks or other things. I was able to locate a gopher I suspected easily, the probe probably had an easier time going in as it had rained recently, but the pole is still quite sturdy. And I like how lightweight it is for easy carrying around and storage.
