I bought this smallrig cage for my a7cii because I wanted to mount a side handle to improve the stabilization for my handheld shooting. All in all, the cage adds an extra layer of protection, and makes mounting accessories super convenient. I've also attached a smallrig top handle as well, so this cage has so much versatility. Aside from mounting options, I feel like the handling and ergonomics are better for my longer lenses. Can't go wrong with smallrig, highly recommend it!

This cage for the A7Cii makes the smaller body more pleasant to use, but does add a little bulk. It appears to be made from a high quality aluminum and is quite sturdy while being lightweight. I appreciate that it also mounts to the top of the camera for additional stability. I wanted this to provide additional hand-holding comfort with the extended grip, give me the Arca mount, provide some additional mount points. For the hand grip, this definitely makes things more comfortable for my hands because it gives me a place for my pinky to rest on the camera and expands the grip area slightly. This lets it fit into my palm and the camera feels significantly better in the hand. It really is a game-changer for using the A7Cii body with a larger or heavier lens! The mount points are exactly as expected, giving an additional cold shoe which is great for a light or non-digital mic. The cage also provides the usual screw points for handgrips. The Arca mount plate on the bottom is also easy to attach to my tripod, as expected. Does not block the battery compartment as promised. One criticism, the included tool used to screw the grip to the camera does not fit very securely; I feel like I will lose it.Finally, it's nice that the grip gives a little extra height for the camera while sitting on a table. Some of my larger lenses (zooms and F1.2/F1.4) are bulkier than the camera and they wouldn't sit level, but they do now with the grip attached!I highly recommend this to all A7Cii owners even if you aren't a videophile. it really helps the camera grip feel more comfortable and provides some extra protection for the body, at the expense of some weight.

I regularly sing the praises of SmallRig products, not because I'm a fanboy, but because they manufacture a series of useful video accessories that are (mostly) high-quality and always economical--all of which is true with respect to their cage kit for the A7C II. I love my A7C II, and my only reservation when I got it was that it might be too small, but the SmallRig cage solves that problem. Since I primarily use the CII as a video camera, a cage is a necessity, since I always use an external monitor and frequently use a V-mount battery. But I also use it for photos, and I was surprised by how much more ergonimic the cage makes the CII. Now I feel like I have the perfect combination, a solid, flexible and ergonomic camera with the cage on, and a highly compact camera suitable for travel and gimbal use with the cage off. Of course, all of the important details about the cage are in order--more mounting holes than I'll ever need, proper allignment for access to all buttons, ports and doors, a QR plate, and a cable clamp for the HDMI cable (which really helps mitigate the fact that the CII uses a mini HDMI cable). The price to quality ratio for this cage is excellent.

Fits perfect and provides so many mounting points and lots of protection.Only minor minor issue is the mini HDMI clamp "screws" fall out easily after loosening if you don't always keep it rigged up for video.

The Smallrig Cage Kit is really intended for video use. The whole idea behind the cages is that you have numerous mounting points for handles, external monitors, microphones, lights and who knows what else. For me I wasn’t so much interested in using it for video as for Still Photos. What I was looking for is something that could allow switch from portrait to landscape orientation with my Arca Swiss clamps. This has an arca swiss compatible mount on the bottom. I have some generic 1/4x20 arca plates, maybe if I combined the two.The result is a little bulky but functional mount that indeed let me swap between two orientations. Mission accomplished.I’m attaching some pictures of the rig. It works, even with a full size heavy lens. Beyond that basic goal the cage has some other advantages.I use it on the A7c2 which is a very compact camera. The cage makes the camera larger and easier to grip. The extra space on the bottom lets me get my pinky on it (I have Medium sized hands). The extra metal around the grip makes it fatter and firmer. While this kind of defeats the whole idea of a compact camera it has its uses. I’m not sure I would use this on trip, but if I were doing a photoshoot or going to be handling the camera all day the extra grip is nice to have. The next advantage is that it is a later of protection. If the camera is swinging around on your neck and hits something chances are the cage is going to take the hit.Third is that it does rebalance the camera in a more comfortable way (though it is a net weight gain). It swings around less when hanging from your neck and maintains a more comfortable orientation with lighter primes. One thing I was worried about is if it got in the way of the controls and hatches. It doesn’t. It does obstruct the dial knobs a bit but you can work around those. Even with the extra arca plate on the side it allows access to the card and USB slot. There is a hinged piece on the bottom that you flip out to access the battery. It includes a tool that magnetically attaches to the bottom to mount and unmount the cage to the 1/4x20 slot on the bottom. It works well but I would carry the tool separately to not lose it.It works but its not perfect. There is some flex in the system even when fully mounted. If your doing long exposure shots you need to be mindful of this. I had a few go blurry on me from it. But if you use a timer (which ideally you should) its not an issue.
