Way too small and heavy for backpacking

So, this is a clever bear can that fits inside my backpack (zpac arc haul) and leaves room for most of my other gear. The lid is very secure, but takes some time to open (I use dimes and pennies as my tool to open)The tapered design means less space in the lower half of the can, but actually makes it much easier to pack in the backpack. You can also just cram tons of food. I did a ten day carry with this thing. It also makes a great stool to sit on!Cons: It is a bear can, meaning added weight and bulky. It is a pain to carry, but if I am going though an area that requires a bear can, and I need a lot of food, this is a great design.

This seems secure enough — the screws are actual screws and not locking tabs, so it will take you a good 30 seconds to open it (I like the recommendation from other reviewers to find an appropriately-sized washer to use as a screwdriver). I like that it's more hermetically sealed than other designs. It's way too big for my purposes, but that's my fault. I do like the longer/narrower design for pack arrangement, but a

I was very excited when ordering this - finally a bear box with a more pack able shape. How wrong I was. This product is horrible - it is actually less shapely and packable than the standard competitors. There are so many product flaws! The lid is attached by three screws that’s do not thread well making it a pain to open and close. Not only that, they are super easy to lose because the washers that’s supposed to hold them in are junk. These washers are super tiny and guaranteed will be lost in the backcountry after one or two uses. They easily come off the screw and there’s no sort of stopper to keep them attached.Even if you manage to not lose these critical tiny pieces. The bear box is not easy to open. Once you undo the screws, the 5mm edge of a handle is useless in opening the box - I either had to get another tool to crack the box open, or just flip it upside down and risk dumping everything out on the ground. The product needs a few more iterations to be suitable for the backcountry - in the mean time I want my money back

For some reason this isn't highlighted in the marketing materials,, although backpackers should be amongst those most sensitive to the dangers of plastics to human and environmental health. My research suggests that Frontiersman's bear keg is the only one of its type made from this relatively benign material. It's competition and the market leader is made from polycarbonate, composed primarily of BPA, phosgene, Chlorine, and Benzene. Food safety should be a consideration when making a food storage container. That the slim, ergonomic design sits more comfortably in the pack than others is the cherry on top!

Good size, especially for car camping. Heavier but more carryable than my previous bear canister, and super sturdy. However, you need a coin or screwdriver to remove the screws, which is a pain and a risk when hiking. And the screws aren’t designed to stay in when you remove the lid, so they’re easy to drop and can be hard to see. The washers that are probably supposed to keep the screws on the lid fell off on our first trip, never to be seen again.

Took this on a recent backcountry camping trip in Killarney Provincial Park and it was perfect! Truly takes about 10 minutes to open but hopefully that also makes it harder for the bears. Very roomy inside, perfect for 2 people for 3 days of meals and snacks. You just have to be a bit strategic about how you load it so you don't end up needing something on the very bottom. We left it in the bush overnight for 2 nights and it was completely untouched by any wildlife. Not sure if we just got lucky no bears found it or if that speaks to its smell-sealing abilities, but we are happy with it so far.

(Key points: USE A NICKEL! SEEMS BIG BUT IS PERFECT-FITS 60L! LIGHTER THAN MANY BEAR KEGS! SO COMFORTABLE ON BACK!WOW!) After reading the comments I am a little shocked! Hi, I’m the wife. I have the 60L REI Flash pack (which I love and got it on clearance for $100) just got back from our 22 mile heavy duty NC hike and rented an awfully heavy bear keg-my husband said the shape was making it uncomfortable for him plus the weight-no good! This Orange piece of awesome is incredibly light compared to that keg we used. After about just 3 minutes of jimmying this in my pack, (will take seconds now that I know how I like it) I found a good spot for it-almost touching the bottom-with my (cylinder) sleeping bag and sleeping pad a little under it and going up each side towards the front of my pack. At first I thought it was a bit tight...then it was just fine with the room to spare for my extra clothes and everything else needed on top or in the outer compartments. VERY COMFORTABLE in the pack! Don’t even feel it! I truly believe I found the EASIEST way to open/close this thing. USE A NICKEL! It fits perfectly and stays in the grove so you just spin it! You’ll be surprised how easy it is, you’re welcome. Spin each one a little (10ish turns or so) and switch screws so it’s even pressure. It’s not hard at all. The size is great-carry for multiple people, the dog food, utensils, whatever, for days! So happy about this and especially knowing it’ll be safe-and the ease of not having to hang. Fits below the extra room line on the top. Love it!

I just got back from a week of paddling and camping in the Adirondacks and the Frontiersman Insider performed as expected. I easily packed 6 full days of meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) plus a pack of 12 tortillas and 12 Babybel cheese wedges. Also lots of extra coffee, tea, syrup etc....No bear issues but not sure how close we were to any. We did notice some fresh scat 600 or so meters from camp. After reading previous reviews I placed the container upside down at night and even though we had over 24 hours of rain it remained totally dry inside. At close to 3 pounds empty certainly not light weight but I thought a great option to store food without hanging a bag. Worked well for me, fits great (inverted) in a Frost River Isle Royale pack along with my gear for a 6 day trip.

Product survived 4 attempts by a bear to claw it open. Also some evidence that the bear may have thrown a foot long rock at it. Claw marks on sides, but no significant damage.Product design is very well thought out. It acts like a funnel down into the bottom of the backpack with clothes and other items stored along the sides of bear can.Bottom of container is just big enough for bricks of Ramen Noodles and Pop Tarts which are the two primary food groups for my teenage son.Top of the container can fit a 1.5 L pot upright position, but a 2 L pot would have to go in sideways.Screws are a little bit of a pain at the end of a difficult hike when darkness is surrounding you. But they survived the bear, so I say they are okay. You just have to make sure that the lid is sitting flat when you tighten the screws.
