I'll be honest, before this pizzelle maker arrived, I had only a vague idea of what a pizzelle even was. It was a completely new adventure for our family. But with a crew that's growing like crazy (12 kids, including 8-year-old triplets, PLUS grandkids!), I'm always on the lookout for fun new things to teach them. We're all about making memories and having a good time together, not just collecting stuff. So, what's a pizzelle? It's a thin, crispy Italian waffle cookie, perfect for holidays or any time you want something a little special. They're traditionally made with a special iron, and people love them because they're delicate and not too sweet. This pizzelle iron is fantastic! It's super easy to use and clean, making the whole process smooth and simple, almost like making waffles on a Saturday morning.I'll admit, I was a bit nervous at first. Making pizzelles from scratch seemed tricky. But it turned out to be a piece of cake. This pizzelle maker heats up quickly, and the non-stick plates make clean-up nearly done before it has begun. I made the first batch solo, but then I let the little ones join in. The triplets are always up for cooking, and they had a blast learning about the "new thin waffle maker" – hey, I tried to explain, but that's what they're calling it!Are they time-consuming? Nope! Each batch cooks up in seconds, so it's pretty quick once you get into a rhythm. And do they often turn out badly? Not at all! The basic recipe is a great starting point, and they taste amazing right from the start. The best part is how versatile they are! You can dust them with powdered sugar, drizzle them with melted chocolate, or even get creative and add things like berries to the batter. Here's that beginner-friendly recipe I mentioned:Basic Pizzelle Recipe2 large eggs1/2 cup granulated sugar1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled1 teaspoon vanilla extract1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour1/2 teaspoon baking powderWhisk the eggs and sugar together until they're light and fluffy.Stir in the melted butter and vanilla extract. In a separate bowl, whisk the flour and baking powder together.Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined (don't overmix!).Preheat your pizzelle maker.Pour a small amount of batter onto the center of each plate, close the lid, and cook for about 30-45 seconds, or until golden brown.Use a fork to remove the pizzelles and let them cool on a wire rack. These little cookies were a huge hit with everyone! They're light, crispy, and perfect for dipping in coffee or enjoying on their own. This was a fun experience, and I am sure we will be making many more in the years to come.

I have fond memories of my grandma's pizzelles. She was a Midwest American who didn't have any Italian ancestry, so I don't know how she started making them. I have wanted one of my own. This came with an ingredient list with quantities but no instructions. I used the normal cookie method to mix the ingredients. I will likely use an online recipe going forward. There are no instructions for approximately how long to cook or how much batter to use. I used my cookie dough scoop, but it was too big, so I struggled with getting consistent amounts of batter into the iron. I used a timer to measure the first one pausing while I checked. I ended up with 1:40 for the time.I ended up with uneven excessive browning some times and near perfect other times.I will have to try again to see if it was my inexperience or the iron.It was difficult to oil with a towel and oil because it was hard to get down into the creases. When I noticed sticking it was usually on the flat parts of the design that I could easily oil with a greased paper towel. I ended up spraying with cooking spray as needed and then wiping any pooling amounts. The top plate closer to the hinge seemed to want to stick more than the bottom plate. The plastic exterior does get hot, but that is expected. The locking clip is okay, but it sometimes gets in the way when closing and was a little fiddly.

I have had so much fun making pizzelles for the holidays. The machine is so easy to use and pretty easy to clean. It takes a bit of getting used to but the pizzelles came out great. We had fun decorating them with edible glitter. It is big and I really do not have the space for it. Thankfully this will only come out for some holiday treats so in the closet it will go.

This light weight pizzelle maker is cheaply made out of mostly plastic with a heating element that doesn't provide even coverage over the hot plates. Pizzelles turn out unevenly brown, and the teflon-coated plates don't inspire confidence in their durability. I just can't recommend this unit for anyone in the market for one. Hard pass!

I'm afraid that trying to find the perfect pizzelle-maker is going to totally stress you out because the electric ones will never be entirely even. If you go look at photos from the top-rated pizzelle makers, they have plenty of uneven cookies too. I grew up making cookies using an old-fashioned iron that sat over the burner and heated indirectly and needed to be flipped halfway through. It took hours to make a big batch. But they were beautiful, each one turned out perfectly. But who has time for that? So we have to make some sacrifices. I do have a single-pizzelle maker that cooks pretty evenly because everything is focused on that one cookie. But I simply do not have time to make one at a time. Or two at a time. I've got a large family and a lot to do. So I make four at a time. This one is comparable to my other 4-at-a-time griddle. Because yes, I'm now making 8 at a time. I am from a large family, have a large family, and host holidays at my house because my mom can't cope anymore. The key to getting your cookies to brown as evenly as possible is to let the griddle preheat for awhile. At first, the spot right against the heating element will be hot and the edges warm. But if you let it preheat for awhile (I started mine preheating before I started mixing ingredients) then the heat will have spread through the whole thing. The best way to butter it is to have a glass with a couple tablespoons of melted butter in the bottom. Use a silicon brush. Dip it in the butter and then brush over both top and bottom of the griddle to quickly butter it in all the cracks and crevices so your cookies don't stick.
