Petromax Pressure Lamp: Enjoy Bright Light The Petromax HK500 is among the most famous lamps in the world. Thanks to its impressive light output of 500 CP, the lamp combines a unique technique with an elegant design. Since the Petromax high pressure lamp was invented in 1910, its spellbinding brightness gives light to the darkness. A weatherproof and reliable lamp With its bright light, the robust pressure lamp not only fascinates retro design lovers, globetrotters and outdoor enthusiasts, but is also used by humanitarian aid organizations and armed forces. Thanks to its temperature-resistant borosilicate glass, which is manufactured by the company Schott, the lamp is a reliable light source that can be used in all weathers. A unique high pressure technology The excellent light output of the Petromax lamp results from a simple, yet fascinating principle: The kerosene under pressure is conducted into a carburetor, where the evaporated fuel reacts to the mantle impregnated with luminous salt, which results in a bright, warm light. For this principle to work flawlessly, the more than 200 pieces of the lamp are still assembled by hand. The right accessory for each situation Besides various reflectors, and storage and transport bags, many other accessories are suitable for Petromax lamps. For example, they can be turned into a stove or a radiator. Thanks to this vast range of high-quality accessories, the Petromax lamp can be personalized. Note: Recommended for outdoor use only. This is the famous original Petromax Lantern, originated in 1910 in Berlin, Germany. Today, with updates and improvements, it is still precision manufactured and engineered in Germany, using parts sourced in Germany and other countries. Includes: 1 x Petromax HK500. 1 x Funnel. 1 x Spare Parts Set (5 pieces). 1 x Spirit Bottle. 2 x Mantle HK500. 1 x User Manual (English). Tank capacity: 1 Qt. Burning time: 8 hour(s). Aesthetically, it’s absolutely top notch. I’ve never seen a better looking kerosene lamp. The problem is the lamp is not a modern reproduction of early 1900’s technology. It mostly IS early 1900’s technology. There are two major faults that Petromax needs to address immediately: 1) The burner nozzle is unglazed ceramic. In 1910 that made sense because stainless steel was still uncommon at the time. The problem is the nozzle gets very hot and ceramic doesn’t always handle heat stress well. My nozzle spontaneously broke off. Thank God that happened overnight while the lamp was extinguished and cooling off. Otherwise, I might have had a kerosene-powered blowtorch pointed at the fuel tank of the lamp. That could have burned my house down. I emphasize that the nozzle was never bumped or struck by anything. It could only have been heat stress, probably combined with a microscopic flaw in the ceramic. In the included photo, the circular fracture on the larger round piece is the heat stress fracture. The threaded bits are only broken because I had to chip them out of the matching threads in the lamp. Petromax sells an accessory stainless steel burner nozzle. I bought one and it runs great. Obviously the mantle was destroyed by the falling burner nozzle, so I bought some replacement mantles as well. Spare mantles are a must-have with any pressure lamp and this one only comes with one spare. I have no idea why Petromax doesn’t just install the stainless nozzle at the factory. Frankly, even stainless will fail eventually at this kind of temperature, but it will fail by slowly losing its rust resistance, not suddenly by fracture. 2) The pump cup that allows the pump to seal and function is leather, just like it would have been in 1910 because synthetic rubber had not been invented yet. A brand new leather pump cup can and will pressurize the lantern, but it’s slow, inefficient, and wears out quickly. That’s especially a problem because the blowtorch preheating feature drains the tank pressure quickly. Again, Petromax makes an accessory Schrader valve that replaces the pump and allows me to pressurize the tank in seconds with my battery powered tire pump. At this price point, I can’t understand why Petromax didn’t include the valve accessory with a new lamp. Nor can I understand why they didn’t use a synthetic pump cup instead of leather in 2024.The above issues are particularly galling because the pump and valve handles are modern plastic. In 1910 they would have been brass. So even the vintage look is slightly spoiled, but the needless vintage problems remain.I really wish I could rate this gorgeous lamp higher. It just bothers me as an engineer to buy a lamp for $300 and within a week have to spend $90 on parts to make it work properly and safely. If you just want this as a decoration and never plan to use it, absolutely go for it! If you actually plan to use this, take my advice and buy the stainless burner and the Schrader valve at the same time. Or you could buy three Coleman lanterns and still have cash left over.

Upon receiving the first order, I noticed that the light was flickering and not very bright. However, the second order, which I am fond of, functions well. There is a slight issue with the ventilation valve leaking air pressure, but I discovered a solution online suggesting to tighten and open it a few times using pliers. This should resolve the problem as the valve is made of brass and this action will smoothen its nipple. In conclusion, I am pleased with my purchase. I recommend getting one promptly! Also after 8 month of use its chrome face faded away a little.

I got the original lantern from Petromax. It's a beautiful lantern than other leading brands available in US. However, there is a major design flaw with these units. After a few uses (heating and cooling cycles), the threads on the generator cap where the gas gets out, come loose automatically. What this causes is an unexpected flare-up. If you put this in a tent or living enclosure with a low ceiling height, it will cause a fire hazard. This is not a singular event since you can find many people explaining the problem in internet forums. Although made in Germany, the quality and the engineering of the thread pitch of the generator isn't great. Especially, when it is priced for almost $300 plus.PS: Update: I finally got a Britelyt lantern to compare. Compared to it, the petromax is made of thin metal parts and warps after some moderate use. I heard these are actually made in China and shipped to Germany to put a label. The metal shaving in the fount and thin metal proves made in China theory. Waste of money and Lehman's is selling pure garbage.

This is a fantastic product. Not only does it emit enough light to feel as though you’re sat in your front room at home, it also is a great source of heat.We used this on a recent camping trip in the U.K. in early spring in our bell tent. It exceeded expectations. It is well engineered and manufactured. But it is not for someone who wants instant results. Like anything mechanical it takes time to prepare, and to monitor once running. But that is part of its appeal. If this sounds too much admin (and this lamp is admin) then buy an electric lamp, but you won’t get the same light and heat you will with this Petromax.I fully recommend and I have no doubt this will last a lifetime; which for its price makes it a bargain.
