The Metabo GE 710 1/4" die grinder is one of, if not the best 1/4" die grinder. It comes with a 1/4" collet. The tolerance on the German 1/4" collet is so close that it will not work with most of the 1/4" accessories advertised on Amazon, Aliexpress and Temo which are actually 6mm (.236 NOT .25). Apparently most of these accessories are made overseas where 6mm is the standard. The Metabo is made in Germany where 6mm and 1/4" are not close enough to be interchangeable. If you buy a Metabo GE 710, which I highly recommend, you should also purchase the Metabo 6mm collet currently available on Amazon for about $16. The same goes for 3mm ( .118) accessories which are often advertised as 1/8" (.125) The 3mm Metabo collet (63194000) is also available on Amazon for about $12.

Someone recommended this brand but despite the price premium, imo this is junk. Vibration was so bad your hand is numb in a few minutes. That btw is a health issues, it goes numb because the vibration collapse micro capillaries and damages nerves and can lead to permanent damage. Called HAVS.I am surprised that with the so called German quality they couldn't balance this better

I bought this grinder a while back to use with wire brushes to clean up rusty parts. It works exactly as it should and it's easy to use. I decided to go with a higher-priced tool because the Harbor Freight grinders died within one or two hours. I'm glad I spent the money and got a good quality tool.

Comes with FORGED wrenches for the chuck, not stamped steel. Nice touch. Very smooth running with no measurable runout on a 1/4" straight shaft. Tested with a cutoff wheel, left a very smooth surface. The adjustable speed is precise but can be moved accidentally. A strip of tape will lock it in place.Used it to cut a hole in a sheet of 18 gauge cold rolled steel with a 1/2" rotary burr. Worked like a champ, like a router but meant for this material. The soft start is beautiful ,the safety no start a must. If the switch is on and machine unplugged, the motor will not turn on.

I'm happy with a good price opportunity & quick painfree shipping. It is a true variable speed die grinder (unlike the Bosch DG250C also purchased on Amazon so BEWARE, that one is mislabelled). But I am disappointed with the Metabo collet system. Granted I have this installed in a custom tool, but it was immediately apparent the collet was not running very true. I put a dial test indicator on the collet arbor seat & it measured 0.002" runout. Perfectly acceptable. But when I installed the collet/nut with an accurate ground 0.250" shank gripped in the tightned collet, the shaft has +.015" runout. Ie. the collet bore itself is off center. I tried cleaning any debris & gently lapping the slits & chamfer for any burrs, no improvement at all. Granted my particular installation is in kind of a custom machine as opposed to free-hand grinding where you might not notice this. But this was a disappointment for what is normally an expensive German tool. The other learning is the nut + collet is an integrated assembly, not 2 specific parts. They are not exactly easy to find. None on Amazon, a few on Ebay from 30-50$.So don't lose it. I see some 6mm (Europe) versions & other sizes available which might come in handy but even more expensive. So I'm not thrilled by what I see is lack of Metabo parts support in North America. If anyone has any links or tips in this regard, I'd appreciate them. The motor & overall build is nice, but no better than a Bosch or Makita IMO.

Stopped working after only 3 months of light use (out of return period) has a intermittent issue within the case that causes the motor to stop. Had to take it in for servicing. So much for German quality.

Not for a hobby CNC as I'd hoped. Using this machine on an 840 Stepcraft CNC. For over a year I've struggled to get any bit to center in my GE710. Today 10/26/17 it took 45 minutes to center a V-bit well enough to cut pewter. Always thought it was the chucks I was using but today I was so frustrated for wasted time I took a dial indicator to the inside ground surface of the tapered shaft and found it out of round or rotating off center by 0.006". Makes a huge difference when engraving soft metals. This measurement means a 1/4" cutter will cut a 0.262" path or hole which is unacceptable in a CNC. V-bit points will spin a very small circle if a tool's shaft is not concentric and will not clear chips in pewter and will actually smash through the metal providing a poor cut and bit breakage. V-carving hardwoods cross grain will also chip the wood at the surface leaving a lot of clean up work. The grinder has only been used for soft materials like wood and pewter and never overloaded. Never been abused or dropped or used in any fashion that could damage the shaft. The tool must have been running off center since I purchased it early in 2016. One other point is that the tool stays warm even when it is turned off. This might be due to the safety feature of not starting back up after a power failure, which is an excellent feature. Wish I would have checked the spindle run out before the warranty ran out. DUH!

This Metabo GE710 Die Grinder works exceptionally well. I have used numerous grinders before, both air and electric and really like this one over everything else. It has variable speed, easy on/off switch and lots of power. Where some of the other grinders would noticeably slow down when doing heavy grinding/deburring, this Metabo does not. It is very well made (in Germany not China), heavy and runs cool even with heavy grinding. The price also compares favorably with all the other brands.
