With PEX dominating my installations, my copper soldering days are numbered, but I still prefer to at least solder on the adapter to the old pipe (I don't like push fittings behind sealed-up walls). This pad lets me to get the job done faster and safer, and that's a win-win in my book. No they, won't last forever, but they're definitely more than adequate for the occasional task.

They worked for me. Took on a torch flame for multiple minutes without problem. I mean I wasn't intentionally trying to set them a fire either. It protected what I needed it to.

I got this to help me not burn my home down while I'm soldering a lot of copper pipe beneath our home. These pads are fantastic for when you are too close to a wooden beam. Just tuck it behind where you're working, and the risk of fire is greatly minimized. I will always keep these in my plumbing toolbox from now on.

I'm baffled by how something as soft as Matace welding pads can withstand so much heat. I got sweaters that are more course than these welding pads are lol. I gave these a test when welding a rusted area on my cars control arm and was very pleased by their fireproof capabilities. I figured they would burn at some point but watching red hot cinder after cinder fall of these pads and not catch it on fire sold me on this product. Not tiny spatter cinders I mean a cinder about almost an inch and a half in size fell and laid there until it wasn't hot anymore and these pads did not catch on fire. It barely even left a mark surprisingly. These sure beat pulling out the fiberglass blanket and becoming itchy for weeks just to protect a small area.

Package included 6 mats. They all have pipe hole cut outs in the middle and velcro lock to join overlapped sides of pipe cutout guide channel. They also have steel hanging rings for increased durability. You really need to have several mats to protect wall / corners / ceiling surfaces behind the soldering point. You can also use it to protect kitchen cabinet wood. HVAC contractor who was adding zones to my baseboard heating system didn’t use any mats and see in the pictures what happened to the ceiling board. Old mats can be used as forever wick material for kerosene hand warmers and lighters.

This idea isn't new but my previous pads are kevlar, stiff and expensive - they work fine but can be hard to position and don't have a cutout -These are surprisingly soft and flexible. The material is quite thin but does seem to stop the flame and much of the heat from getting through to what you are protecting -The slit and pre-cut hole for wrapping a pipe is great - easy to fit in place and use.The flexibility makes it easy to deal with the rest of the pad even in tight spaces -These fold up and are super easy to have a few in the toolbox -These do smell when you hit them with a flame - and I don't know how many times you can reuse them before they start to break down but its a whole lot easier to use than what I have been using.Nice product - reasonable price and work well.
