I take on small welding projects and also engage in forging, smelting, and casting metal. Occasionally, I try my hand at creating metal knives and I'm constantly looking to expand my collection of tools and safety devices in my workshop. My workspace includes a forge, a smelting furnace, grinding wheels, welding tables, metal stock, and a welder, all situated within a relatively small area. Currently, I'm using a 10' x 30' outdoor carport that features metal braces, with the top and sides covered by thick plastic tarp material. This space is divided into three 10' sections: one for metalworking and tools, another dedicated to woodworking tools and projects, and the last for my project Jeep. Before I began metalworking in this setup, I found it necessary to install fireproof and fire-resistant blankets around and above my workspace, where I handle flames, sparks, or similar activities. This precaution is intended to protect my other tools, projects, and my Jeep from both direct and indirect heat. After covering the entire metalworking section with the blankets, I proceeded to do some welding and grinding. Since then, I haven't noticed any holes in the sides or top of my carport, which has significantly eased my concerns. The blankets fit perfectly, and their various sizes allowed me to adequately cover my metalworking area with just a few. It's important to note that for anyone unfamiliar working with fiberglass especially when used as welding blankets, always wear high-quality breathing masks, eye protection, and other necessary safety equipment when working with these materials. Although fiberglass is fire-resistant and used as a welding blanket, heat can break it down, releasing microscopic particles and strands into the air. If proper safety equipment is not worn, these particles can enter your lungs or eyes and cause damage. Be carful and safe welding.

I could just make a blanket statement here, but I think there's more to it than that. Alrighty then! So, I dabble in little welding projects every now and then, and I'm always trying to add ingredients to my list of wants, needs, and necessities for my workshop/artist studio. That being said, I've been far too lazy in being willing to spend any money on some really important things, like this Firewess Heavy-Duty Fiberglass Welding Blanket, which is heat resistant, and can take a pretty good beating ... or, I mean, heating, so, I was really happy when I saw this fiberglass blanket on line.I just want to remind those of you who aren't too familiar with fiberglass, but fiberglass is GLASS in thinner than hair strands which can infiltrate your lungs, and, even your skin. So, please wear all the safety equipment necessary when working around this material. Although fiberglass is known as "fire resistant", thus the reason to use it as a welding blanket, keep in mind that as you use fiberglass blankets under these extreme conditions, particulates and microscopic shards of this material float invisibly in the air, so always wear high-quality lung protection, eye protection, and always make sure that your skin is not exposed to this material.OK, now have fun welding and being safe.

Heavy Duty Fiberglass Welding Blanket, Heat Resistant Blanket with Brass Grommets, Multi-Purpose Welding Mat for Grill, Smoker, Camping, Industrial Use (4x6 ft) (4x6 ft)Heavy Duty Fiberglass Welding Blanket, Heat Resistant Blanket with Brass Grommets, Multi-Purpose Welding Mat for Grill, Smoker, Camping, Industrial Use (4x6 ft) (4x6 ft)As a beginning welder I’m trying to incorporate some metal components into my artwork. This does require that I protect the surrounding areas from heat and spatter. This is a really thick nice welding blanket, with grommets and really good stitching. It just feels like nothing can get through this blanket. I have used this blanket to keep heat and spatter away from the welder, and other equipment in the area too. I have laid this out on a regular old table and used it as a welding surface and it works great. One other use for this blanket is when I am welding outdoors and there is too much breeze or wind, I can cover myself and my work, or just provide a windbreak. This is an excellent heavy duty welding blanket that performs well beyond my expectations and is a fabulous value at this price.

For some reason, I always seem to pick up a bunch of build and work right at the beginning of the year. And my metal shop is pretty small, mainly because my building is mostly occupied by the kitchen that I use for my catering jobs. So sometimes, I end up using my outdoor kitchen space as shop space. Not ideal....don't tell the health inspectors. But it's necessary. So I occasionally end up using some of my grills as welding tables. They work pretty well, with a few firebricks laid down on the grates. Problem is, even though the bricks protect the grill grates from direct heat, they don't always keep the spatter off, and they certainly don't keep the grinding debris off. So I end up having to deep clean my grates, which is a chore. Avoiding that extra cleanup is the main reason I got this blanket. It literally has a single job to do--keep my "overflow tables" clean. So far I've just done a bit of grinding on it and it's an absolute dream. It fits my grills perfectly, they're 30x60 inch, and this blanket covers that with a bit to spare on all sides. And since the grill is steel, I just secure the folded-over edges with magnets so it doesn't shift while I'm working. Overall, this is a good find that I think is going to save me a fair bit of cleanup when my shop work is overflowing into my grill area. I might even have to pick up a couple more.
