If you’re like me, you’re willing to spend a little extra on a manual aerator that removes plugs repeatedly without getting stuck. This is not that aerator. I like it, and I’ll keep it. Truth is, like any other aerator i’ve bought, this one requires a screwdriver, mallet, a toothbrush and garden hose on standby. I spend 10X more time unplugging the stuck grass plugs than I do aerating.

I was impressed by the sturdy and durable build quality of this Manual Coring Lawn Aerator. The solid construction gave me confidence that it could handle the job without breaking or bending. However, be aware that it requires assembly, and you’ll need your own tools to put it together—something to keep in mind if you don’t have a well-stocked toolbox.Once assembled, the aerator works effectively to loosen compacted soil and remove plugs, which has noticeably improved my lawn’s drainage and overall health over time. That said, using this tool is quite physically demanding, especially if your yard is larger than a small patch or if the soil is particularly hard. I found that watering the lawn beforehand made the process significantly easier by softening the soil. One minor drawback is that the tines tend to clog with soil, requiring periodic stops to clear them out. While this isn’t a dealbreaker, it does add extra time and effort to the task. For small yards or specific problem areas, this tool is a cost-effective alternative to hiring professional services or renting a machine aerator, but it may not be practical for larger properties unless you’re ready for an intense workout.

Once assembled (self assembly) this is a pretty robust little kit, with extra tines (comes with 4, 2 are used). The unique bit for me is the little core collector box on both ends, so instead of it just "pooping" out these little cores onto the ground, you can accumulate and spread them where you want (or compost them). I did assemble this with the provided two cheap wrenches. They were suitable enough to get the job done without stripping the bolt heads, marring substantially or busting my knuckles. I will say that the assembly does demand rather competent/tight fitting of items, given it's load bearing nature when in use.I had a small hiccup on the tine box assembly with one of the assembly bolt holes not being fully punched out of the metal neck, so I had to use a small phillips and hammer to knock it out. Thankfully it came out without too much persuasion. On well irrigated loamy or sandy soil, this worked great. But it fell victim to the common issue plaguing other yard corers - on some dead patches, it just clogged the tine tube - rather helplessly. I needed a drill to properly clean out the tube on multiple occasions, to the point where it was not efficient to try to generate and use the yard plugs, I just used it to aerate the yard with the clogged tine punch. Maybe larger tubes could help fix this?Anyway, the point of this tool is that it probably is used on older, more stubborn patches of yard. For that, it sadly is still a clog risk - but no more or less than the existing solutions out there. But if you're aerating newer or less trouble soil, this seems like a fantastic (and satisfying) option, especially if you can put it together without any issue.

I bought this KD Stonehedge aerator because I don’t leave plugs on my lawn. If I don’t add topsoil, it takes a few months for the holes to get filled in naturally, so the plugs are just hard dirt clods. If I leave the plugs on the lawn, they will damage my mower blades over time. So I have to rake them up, which takes extra time and effort.I wish it was one solid shaft; all of the screws need to be tightened down really hard, and even then, you can feel some wiggle. Putting on the tines at the bottom of the box with the provided tools is impossible. You need to use your own wrenches and/or socket drivers.I am weary that the tines will hold up; it’s just spot welded; the quality of work on these is really bad; see the picture.I compared this to my open-tine aerator (green in the picture), and the KD Stonehedge plugs much more frequently and is more diffult to unplug. I constantly have to use some tool to unplug the tines after every 3-4 holes. Ergonomically, it is easy to use, and I appreciate that I can use the top or the bottom of the square in the middle to push down with my foot, very similar to my green aerator. The shaft is shorter than my other aerator, which isn’t a problem for me because I’m shorter than average, it might be for someone a lot taller. This product needs two major upgrades before I can highly recommend it: 1. tines that are more than just spot welded and 2. solid shaft with no screws to attach like the green one in the picture.
