The only reason I did not give these a 5 is that is for near perfection like a LN or Clifton hand plane, respectively.I purchased these Jorgensen after a couple or few hours of watching YouTube reviews. The reviewers said for the price, they come with flat soles, hefty eight (a good thing with hand planes). I honestly thought, “Ya, maybe.” Because of the price point being fairly low for a flat plane with a good plane and good chip breaker. I WAS WRONG.1. Sole (plane bottom of both the low angle block plane): These were flatter than some medium (100-200 dollars range) hand planes. It was flat. The edges were square (I did not get out the feeler gauges). I’m a practical woodworker, not an engineer. So when it gets to the various thousandths2. . I’ll save that for later when I drop $400-500 on a high quality Lie Neilsen 5 1/2 hand plane.2. Thickness & Weight of materials: The weight of both the low angle block plane and the No 4 Hand Plane are great; nice and heavy which helps in planing and smoothing.3. Blade and Chip Breaker Prep.Low Angle Block Plane-The blade was sharp, flat, and thick out of the box. All I did was use the David Charesworth ruler trick to put a small back bevel on the blade on my 8000 grit Norton Combo Stone. After some Adjusting the blade properly (human responsibility) it was taking good smooth shavings across the full top edge of solid pine. I did do some work on the lever cap to ensure it was sitting 100% flat against the chip Breaker and blade on the no. 4 and Low Angle Plane.OVERALLI have not found a good budget hand plane with a sole that flat out if the box and a blade that needed very little set up. I am going back with higher grit stones for a keener whisper smooth cut (which in some cases just for marketing).IF YOU WANT A BUDGET BLOCK PLANE AND smoothing Plane, you CANNOT go wrong with this set. I will add a video and pictures a bit later. Don’t be scared to spend the money here or at your home center that carries them.PLUS: IF YIUR NEW OR NEW AT PREPARING A PLANE PROPERLY, you can start here and have no fear and LEARN how to set up these planes and blades and Chip Breakers properly without fear of messing up an almost $200 to $600 plane or plane set (2) and regretting it.YOU WILL GROW TO LOVE THE ORANGE PLANES AS MORE THAN A READY BEGINNER PLANE AND SAVE HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS UNTIL YOU HAVE PLANE SET UP MASTERED AND PLANE USE MASTERED. THEN DROP THE CASH IN A PLANE OR SET IN THE UPPER HUNDREDS AND HAVE CONFIDENCE IS PLANE SET UP, SHARPENING, AND USE. The only negatives I found were 2: 1) The lever cap works but could be higher quality of metals and thickness. 2) The forward adjustment adjustment grates a bit in its counterpart. Thats It.CONCLUSION:Don’t let the orange fool you.Give the Jorgensen and set them up properly. You will be PLEASANTLY SURPRISED at a small fraction if similar high quality planes. Thanks for reading this far!Sincerely, Travis
