Great book. Good explanations and pictures. It's nice that it came with the needles, too. Having 4 size needles is a great bonus and allowed me to try my hand at needle tatting using the different threads/yarns I had, getting a good feel for it. I was able to make a bookmark within a couple of hours of reading and practicing a bit. Fun craft!

If you've never done needle tatting before, this is the perfect book to get. The instructions are easy to follow and the pictures are very clear. I would also suggest looking at videos on U tube to help make it clearer. Tatting is fun, easy and the final product is beautiful and looks a lot harder than it is.

I just started Tatting, I had been using a shuttle previously and found using a shuttle to be a bit difficult. I was on You Tube looking at tatting videos, when I saw how to use a tatting needle. This looked far easier to use than a shuttle. I went on a search to purchase one in my town. I soon discovered that they were no where to be found. I looked in our local fabric, and craft stores. Nothing. I was told the only way to get one was to go online. Well I came to Amazon and Bingo I found exactly what I was looking for. What I really liked about the Handy Hands was that for one price which was outstanding that I got not only the instruction booklet which has easy and step by step instructions but that, I also received four Needles in different sizes. I would say for the $17 that I paid that it was well worth it. This is the best for learning Tatting And thank you to Amazon for the two day shipping. I Paid a little more for the two day shipping but for it to arrive the next day It was awesome .

I've tried to learn to tat before, using some books I inherited from my Grandma. Each book presented the patterns using different terminology, & I finally gave up. Barbara Foster not only uses simple language and very clear step-by-step photos, but she also explains how to read & convert the older patterns for needle tatting.WOW! I was actually turning out beautiful projects (that I can actually USE!) while working my way through the tutorials. And I've been able to teach my daughter-in-law the basics so we can learn together.I found it very helpful that Barbara also offers a DVD to accompany the book. If you need a bit more visual hands-on than you find in the book, be sure to check that out, as well. I prefer the book . . . my daughter-in-law likes the video better. It all depends on your learning style.Either way, this is definitely a "Must Have" for anyone who wants to learn to tat!

Lots of very clear photos made this book useful as I was learning. The book left me with a bit of confusion over some fine points, but I was able to resolve them by watching YouTube tutorials. I would have liked a few more projects, but I successfully made everything in the book. I had tried shuttle tatting and simply could not figure it out, needle tatting worked for me instantly. One suggestion: include a small skein of cord, a yard or two would do. It certainly should not add significantly to the cost or shipping. (I had to make a 20-mile trip to a craft store for a $1.99 ball of cord, 400 yds.) That way, the kit is complete and purchasers can start needle tatting immediately.

After seeing a demonstration of needle tatting, I was intrigued by it and this book was recommended as a great teaching tool. Local stores no longer carry the needles, but they are included with this book. Each photo is clear and simple to follow, and I was able to create the butterfly and bookmark right away. The book teaches how to read a tatting pattern. Needle tatting seems less complicated than shuttle tatting yet the results look the same. I'm still a beginner, but want to keep practicing and learning more complicated patterns. This book is a great way to get started.Added in April, 2013: I made 35 bookmarks to give to friends in their holiday cards and everybody wanted to know how I made them. Now I'm working on snowflakes and hearts (patterns not in this book) for the coming holidays. There are many pattern books available for tatting, but most are for the shuttle. Look for needle tatting books until you become adept at this art form.

This was a really great, easy way to learn needle tatting. I started with the bookmark as my first "project". I have never needle tatted prior to this. I do crochet some but I am no where near skilled when it comes to that. I did learn how to do that from a book when I was pregnant with my daughter (she is 8 now) and I figured if I could learn that from a book, I may be able to do this as well. The instructions in this book were very clear and the pictures were super helpful. The book goes through a step by step process and teaches you the basics and slowly introduces the abbreviated pattern instructions. The way the whole thing was put together couldn't have been better, in my opinion. The only thing that could have made it better is if Barbara Foster herself was sitting next to me giving me step by steps. My little bookmark came out perfectly and looked just like the picture, I honestly couldn't be more pleased.
