Choosing the Correct Filter Size

stack of green frame 16x20x1 filters showing nominal and actual size being organized by employee

Nominal Size vs. Actual Size

The nominal size is a shorthand number rounded to the nearest whole or half inch, normally in a larger font (ex: 16 x 20 x 1). Whereas the actual size is an exact measurement, normally in a smaller font, that depicts the filter's precise dimensions (ex: 15.50 x 19.50 x 0.75). All filters have both.

Measuring Your Air Filter

If your current air filter does not have a dimension listed on the frame, use a tape measure to record the width x length x depth to find the actual size. Then round these measurements up to the nearest inch to find a corresponding nominal size, which will be easier to locate when searching online.

  • To maintain a healthy lifestyle, as breathing dirty air can put you at risk to develop asthma, allergies, and other respiratory ailments. Plus, old filters can cause system defects which may lead to unwanted expenses via energy costs and repairs.

  • We generally recommend replacing your filter every 90 days to keep your system running efficiently and air clean. But this is subject to change based on filter size and variable factors for pet owners, allergy sufferers, homes with children, etc.

  • Most of our filters are universally compatible and will work with any furnace, air conditioner, heat pump, or HVAC system as long as you choose the proper size. But if you see a specific brand name on a listing, make sure it matches your unit model.

  • This varies for every customer depending on specific needs such as the number of vents in your home. However, our selection includes package quantities that range from 1 to 12 filters, so no matter what your situation may be, we've got you covered.

  • After finding the right size, turn off the power supply and remove the cover from your intake vent before taking out the old filter. Then just insert your new filter to match the direction of air flow, replace the cover, and turn the power back on.

The 20x30x2 filters are hard to find locally and was glad to find them here. They work well and shipped without any damage. I’ll keep buying these.

The filters arrived in the proper shipping time frame. The filters were the correct size and the filter media seems to be correct. I immediately changed filters to the new filter. It fit and has been in service for more than 30 days without issue. I will look to this seller when I need additional replacements.

I recently purchased this product, and I am extremely satisfied! It is exactly as described—high quality, durable, and incredibly useful for everyday needs. The functionality is spot on, making it both practical and convenient to use. What impressed me most is that, despite its excellent quality, it’s very reasonably priced, making it a fantastic value. It’s clear that a lot of thought went into the design and performance, and it has exceeded my expectations. If you’re looking for a great product at an affordable price, I highly recommend this one!

The materials of this 20x25x4 filter seem to be of good quality and filter is made in USA. The filter dimensions are undersized and as a result loosely fits in the furnace track. 19-3/8 x 23-3/8 x 3-5/8. The filter gets sucked out of the frame and does not filter the air. The frame of the filter does not indicate it is a MERV 13: only a removable label. I would like to buy American but improvements need to happen with this filter.

The four inch filters make a tight fit and can be a little difficult to put in, however, I still prefer them as they require less total time to put in.

I did a lot of research last year when our air quality was severe from the wild fires. I got a number of air purifiers but got these to try a home made one with a fan. I read a couple University papers on the topic and they recommended nothing less than 2 inches and this high of a hepa rating.I have a mild allergy to our dog and it can really affect my sleep. The small room purifier I didn't think was doing the job. So I took the homemade one and put it next to my bed. Wow! Utterly amazing. No snoring, no stuffy nose, just a fabulous sleep. And it was like you could feel the air was cleaner. So yes I highly recommend.

I ordered a quantity of 4 - 16x25x4" filters which were a better price than the Filtrete filters I've previously used.. These filters are certainly equal in quality... Will certainly order them again..

As you can see in the photos, the filter is 4” longer on the one side of my 20” box fan. I simply cut a piece of cardboard for that section and taped off everything to a good air seal. I keep the fan going in my back bedroom to cut down on the noise. I also operate it from 7 pm to 7 am on low. These are the lowest hydro rate times. I keep the furnace air vent wide open in that room and the door wide open too for good air circulation in my 850 square foot house. There is hardly any dust on my floors or in my house now. I used the big fan on high during bathroom renovations last month and little dust settlement. I can see I will have to change this filter at the three month mark because of the renovations. But the next one, I hope can extend for six months before replacement. Yes, the MERV 13 filters are expensive, but in these pandemic times, and me being 69 with health problems; my goal is the best air quality. I am quite happy with this simple portable solution. And hey, the 20” fan was $30.00 at Canadian Tire store. I saw an identical fan on Kijijii for $10.00. Fans are dirt cheap, but really do the air circulation job well for the filter operations.
