if you wanna get some accurate readings, make sure that you are cleaning and tanning your soldering iron tip before metering itOriginally, I started with some oxidized tips and I was shocked to find out the temperatures were between 20 to 30° less than what they should beThen I clean the tips with the brass brush and put them in some tinning stuff and got accurate Readings as I wanted to know if the tip of the tips were good as in some projects I didn’t seem to be getting very far with melting solder so I was more worried about the sides, getting hot and the tips, but fortunately the tips are all good.I have quite a collection of cartridge type soldering irons that I want to go through and get rid of as long as I can know for sure that they are worthless compared to my more expensive station unitThe K type prob seems to be very close to what the little three wire probes read, which is good. But, you cannot use the three wire on the tester pro and the K type at the same time.I’m not sure how you know if your little three Wire testers are dead unless they just don’t read it all? So I’m not sure if they slowly get an accurate or it’s easier as they work perfectly or they don’t work at all.It comes with a 9 V battery which is very tightly packed in the bag so you gotta make sure that you hide your 9 V wire well or else you will have a hard time slipping the cover on the backThis is kind of a not necessity item, but I like having it because I collect things like this and things calibrate or help me calibrate or higher on my list of things to haveThere may be some others that are less expensive about there, but this one seems robust enough and having the ability to remember the max temperature convenientIt is easy to switch between centigrade and Fahrenheit, it shuts off after non-use and again the temperature is really nice to haveJust make sure you remember when you’re reading if you have it in centigrade or Fahrenheit because originally it was in Fahrenheit, and my soldering station is only centigradeThe unit comes with 10 three wire probes and a separate package

I’m having a hard time, understanding the value of this unit, considering all of the conditions which can affect the reading. It seems to me essentially this is a useless item. Depending upon the shape of your soldering iron, depending upon the airflow in your environment, depending upon how much tinning you did to the tip, depending upon what type of solder you’re using, depending upon how clean the sensor is and how clean the tip is, and how clean the area underneath the sensor is which by the way you will need to replace, depending upon how much pressure you’re putting on the sensor, depending upon how old the sensor is and how many times you’ve used it and when you might need to replace it and depending upon the charge left in the 9 V battery and depending upon whether or not you’re doing it right but they don’t really tell you how to do it. It makes me really beg the question what’s the point and do I really need another useless device sucking down expensive 9 V batteries? Honestly, this just seems like a clever device designeed to require you to replace a bunch of tiny little supplies all the time and even the device itself. It strikes me as less accurate than a magnetic stud finder and more useless than a car O2 sensor.I have an infrared thermometer that I bet will give me more consistent and more accurate readings of the tip of my soldering iron then something that somehow needs to run electricity through some solder on the tip.
