Bought this last month and have been using it with no issues (other than the USB connections being very tight) and it just died today. The laptop detects it still, the usb ports on top still work, but the drive doesn’t come on at all. I even tried changing the usb ports I plug it into, no change. Paid over $100 for this to only have it work for a month. I don’t recommend.

Out of the gate, this isn't backup friendly but can be made so with resources available online. I've had no issues using this. Watched The Wild Robot in 4k (BYO software for playback) without issues. No complaints. Does what it says, works as expected. Easy recommendation.

My goal with this was to be able to backup my UHD movies. Well here's what I found and how I made it work INCREDIBLY WELL, backing up UHD disks with MAX READ SPEED!!!So I took this apart and looked at every component. It did read UHD disks out of the box, but the read speed was terrible. Upon further investigation, turns out the controller used is just USB 2.0, not 3+.I looked at the drive data and it shows up as "BU40N" and the firmware was some sketchy firmware I've never seen before. So I did what any engineer would do and decided to rig it. I removed the controller board, purchased an adapter from SLIMLINE ATA to SATA and used a trusty SATA to USB 3 adapter to connect it to the computer. Before doing this, using the original controller, I did manage to easily update the firmware to BU40N 1.03 from MakeMKV forums. I used MartyMcNuts' flasher and it worked flawlessly. No encryption. But after doing this, I tried backing up a disk and the speed was at 0.1x (due to slow USB 2.0 transfer speeds). However, after using the USB 3 adapter instead, with the SLIMLINE ATA to SATA adapter, I managed to get speeds up to 6.1X reading the disk. This reduced the backup time from 14 hours (with the original controller) to under an hour (with the USB 3 adapter). So yes, if you get this, you get a nice drive that's easy to flash and backup your disks, but you need to put some elbow grease into it for it to work well. See attached photos for details on what and how I've done the conversion.Note: some SATA to USB controllers do NOT have external power. Most of those do NOT recognize a disk drive. I used a VANTEC brand adapter with USB 3 and it worked well. There's a VANTED USB 2.0 model as well, make sure you don't get that one. Also the adapters from Insignia (best buy) brand without external power ALSO do not work. Same with MicroCenter Inland branded adapters.

works well, but the usbs are tight and hard to insert, which will definitely cause physical issues after X amount of uses.

It's a good drive and does it's job. I didn't realize my PC didn't have a built-in disc drive, so I got this and am satisfied. Would recommend to those needing to use physical discs.

I like it so I can watch movies on my Windows 10 Laptop PC! I have not tried burning anything yet, but I bet it works great for that too!

Works perfectly! I was able to rip both blue Ray and ultra definition movies. I tried several software applications and found Make MKV worked flawlessly with this device. A little pricey than other devices but I’m happy with the overall results.
