This is a really nice Soil Moisture Sensor and works perfectly for me. I have two of them and use them with my Ecowitt WS90 Weather Station. Very well made and seem to be accurate. I have the setup with my Ecowitt weather station to notify me (by text & email) when the moisture gets too low, so I remember to water the plants. They also work great outside with my tomato plants and herbs.

After planting a meadow I wanted to dial in spray irrigation across about half an acre. Unfortunately, my Ambient weather station is a basic model that doesn't support soil moisture sensors. So I got a few of these little units, combined with an Ecowitt GW-1100 gateway, and quickly hooked everything up to our wifi network. Now I can monitor soil moisture in five different spots (yet, they really are quite different) and have adjusted sprinkler times accordingly. So they're saving me water while getting me better wildflower germination and blooming.I gave them 4 stars instead of 5 because battery life. They take an AA battery (alkaline) and they only last about 45 - 60 days in my environment. I was kind of assuming I'd have to change them each season, but obviously it's more often.

I have tried sooooo many different moisture meters from really cheap crap with double metal rods that show light intensity, moisture, and soil pH which is always inaccurate, single metal rod by XLUX company which are very reliable and very accurate but you have to poke the soil in multiple places which damages roots, to expensive ones by Blumat that cost $90 per each meter which is way overpriced and it only shows the moisture without any graph 📈 or remote Bluetooth or Wi-Fi capabilities, and bunch of other ones that were always showing wrong readings, until someone told me to try these Ecowitt WH51 and WH51L sensors. The WH51 model is great and shows moisture levels from the top 7 inches of soil which is great for all types of pots up to 7 to 10 gallons. You can and should also buy their Wi-Fi Gateway that gives you access to the moisture meter data from anywhere in the world and it comes with graphs that show previous days, weeks, months readings that you can compare and dial in your watering habits for better performance. You can add up to 8 devices per each GW1100 Wi-Fi Gateway and it comes with an app, as well as their website and you can set up alerts to come in through the app, as well as get an email alert when soil goes below your indicated level which is very very useful. Now when it comes to raised beds and 20+ gallon containers I had to purchase the WH51L model which comes with a probe attached to 1 meter long cable which allows you to use them in deep pots/beds/containers and they can also be connected to the same GW1100 Wi-Fi Gateway. The WH51L model had just came out 2 weeks ago and is only available on Ecowitt's site, but I was able to buy them 2 weeks prior to them being available for sale and it turns out both of these models are very accurate. The Wi-Fi gateway also has a temperature and humidity and pressure sensor which gives you readings of the room where the gateway is located. I plugged in mine inside my grow room next to my grow tents to monitor the temperature and humidity inside that room to make sure my grow tents are in an optimal environment. I can't say enough good things about Ecowitt! Customer service is very helpful and very responsive. The only thing I did not like is that they are based in China and you can't really call them and the only method of communication is via email but like I said they are very helpful and responsive, however, they'll respond within 24 hours. If you haven't tried this company yet, then don't waste your money on anything else and do yourself a favor get this Wi-Fi Gateway along with the moisture meters because you won't be disappointed. I was very surprised that they are very inexpensive in comparison to other meters who have half the functions or even quarter functions and work so great and the battery lasts way over a year. I mean when comparing to the Blumat meter that cost $90 it's like comparing apples to oranges because for $90 it should be able to do more, at least have remote capability but it doesn't even have that option. In my opinion it's extremely overpriced and these Ecowitt devices without a doubt are blowing away Blumat meters. I hope this helps 🪴🪴UPDATE: It's been 1.5 years since I got these sensors and the batteries gone from 1.6v power which is completely full batteries to now 1.5v and a couple of them at 1.4v which is almost full and still at 90% capacity. I haven't disconnected the batteries once and I use them continuously cycle after cycle and the only thing I do is I rinse them in between cycles and then insert them into the new container and change the name in the app and voila. Just amazing! 🤩

I was going away on a month-long holiday and needed a way to automate the monitoring and watering of my plants. There are loads of DIY solutions on Amazon that use a simple controller or Arduino, but none have an easy interface for me to monitor remotely. This seems to be the only one from a reputable brand with the ability to connect to WiFi (via a bridge) and I already have an Ecowitt weather station, so the cost of the bridge and the setup is already covered.Make sure you use a fresh battery to set up the sensor. After setup, a rechargeable battery can be used and it will continue to work down to 0.9V.UPDATE 2023: Make sure you use the rubber cap hidden underneath the box to cover the battery door; otherwise, there could be water ingress in rainy weather.

Absolutely love these. I been looking for reliable, consistent connected soil moisture sensor for a while now. These capacitative sensors are not prone to corrosion like EC-based probes. I’m actually surprised how easy they are to connect to the gateway, it’s automatic! The range is also amazing I don’t think they will have trouble connecting if placing them outside around the property unless you live on an acreage or farm. The web app also works pretty well. I like how it shows the AD value in calibration mode so you can set up the lower and upper bound values corresponding to 0% and 100% moisture levels. They are also affordable and not too pricy. You can pull up the web app on computer or phone and look at the data from anywhere in the world, so they are truly connected. The only downside is that each gateway can only connect up to 8 sensors, but the gateway isn’t too expensive either. I only wish that they would have luminosity sensors to keep track of maybe light level too for the plants.
