A fish hook is more than a formed piece of wire with a point on one end and an eyelet on the other. It represents the connecting point between you and your angling dreams, whether sitting on lawn chairs catching trout with friends and family or competing at the highest level in the sport. Since 1925, in Denver, Colorado, the men and women of Eagle Claw have been privileged to ensure that connection.

I’ve bought this rod for my son to teach him how to cast and fly fish. I agree that the #3 rod performs better with a #4 line, but is able to handle a cheap #3 line too. My son enjoys the rod a lot and will soon be able to handle a more expensive rod with care and skill.

You can't go wrong with this rod at this price. Is it the most amazing fly rod ever? No, but for under $40 it's a steal and gets the job done. I got mine because I wanted something smaller than my 9' 5wt and didn't want to spend a lot. I figured worst case I'd be out a tank of gas. I've fished this rod in Colorado trout streams almost exclusively since I got it 2 years ago with no issues. I've caught plenty of fish, can cast just fine, and I've never been disappointed with the rod.

I see the Eagle Claw Featherlight 6' 6" 3wt as a pleasant novelty. I really like it, but for a serious beginner, I think there might be much better choices.Fly fishing is a very diverse sport that has nuance, tradition and deep skills that can provide a lifetime challenge. If a novice angler's goal is to explore these challenges, a quirky small creek fly rod might not be the best starting point.Even though the rod is inexpensive, once you add up the costs, a fly line, reel, leaders, flies, fly box, the cost runs up past the price of a very nicely thought out, decent quality combo. also, without experience, a novice angler is likely to buy some things that don't work out.As an example, The Reddington Path combo costs $109 if you shop. A 9' 5wt Path combo would equip a novice for a much wider range of fly fishing experiences. There are several other combos that would be a great starting point, too.Just something to consider, if you are just starting out. Fly fishing is a lifetime thing for some people. it's deep water.

Other than an old red Eagle Claw rod I have it's been a while since I've had an Eagle Claw rod. I noticed allot of Rod manufactures coming out with fiberglass rods again. So I decided to research some and was really surprised at the prices! So continuing my research I ran across the Eagle Claw rods. After reading several good reviews I decided to order one, and I am not disappointed. Fishing several small creeks here in the Southeast, this is a great rod. It would also be a good rod for a beginner since it is very forgiving. If you are used to graphite rods, you can easily cast this one you just have to get the momentum right, it a bit slower, but still a fun casting rod.

Just started using it and casting. So far its casts pretty good. Hitting out to 65' casts with this rod by just pairing it up with a cheap Chinese 4wt line I had lying around. 65' is more than enough I would ever need to fish the small creeks this rod is designed for. When I actually get a good name brand line, I am sure it will cast like a dream. Beats alot of other rods in this category just by the simple price. A lot of rod companies are bringing back fibreglass rods for 150-300 a rod. Old technology, nostalgia, and feel for prices that should be reserved for higher end rods. This is will do 99% of anglers that need a short fibreglass rod for small creeks and tight quarters. It gives a nice full bend in the loading of the rod and rolls the line out nicely. This is going to be a perfect rod for dries. I will report back for durability and how it fishes overtime. But overall a great rod for the price.

I love this rod. I think it casts like a dream and can cast a 3/4/5 line. I have been fly fishing for years and have a number of rods in this weight/length, but this one will be getting some use. If I had found this earlier I likely would not have a few of those other rods.I have cast with a 3WF, 4WF, 4DT and a 5WF and I can cast 45' with accuracy, which is plenty for where this 6'6" rod will be used. It is faster than a Cabela's CGR 4WT, definitely on the faster side of the fiberglass spectrum. This is a very good fly fishing bargain. There is a lot of gear snobbery in fly fishing, which is funny - people may dismiss this rod as cheap junk - but that is their loss. Take the chance and get one and check out The Fiberglass Manifesto web sites review of this rod.I am going to to get the 8' 5/6 to use with 6WT and 7WT for larger rivers and stillwater bass fishing.EDIT: added a few photos. This is a fun rod that now is kept in the trunk of the car along with a cheap Martin Model 60 'tuna can' reel so it is available if a pond or small stream calls out to me. I think it is great with a 4wt DT line and it is best used for small streams/brooks or hunting bluegill or crappie.

I own 8 fly rods in the 200-400$ range and really appreciate a well made fly rod. I fish small streams regularly and love a short, slow action rod for short, accurate casts. I own a similar high priced 6 foot 3 weight but was very curious to see how this cheap little fiberglass rod was. A similar brand name fiberglass rod averages 200-500$. The eagle claw is very impressive for what it is. It doesn't compare to a more expensive rod but it is $30...what do you expect. For the money, you will not find a better fly rod. Do your self a favour and grab one of these as a backup or to teach your kids.

I have been fly fishing on and off for about 15 years now, mostly piddling around ponds for bream. Over the past couple of years, however, I have been using a fly rod almost exclusively for all of my fishing. I am what I would consider and intermediate when it comes to my level of proficiency. So, take that into consideration as you read through my observations on this rod. This Eagle Claw Featherlight 3/4 weight fly rod is an absolutely amazing bargain. I have yet to fish it, but have done a good bit of dry casting in the yard. I can hardly put it down! As compared to the graphite rods that I have been fishing my whole life, it has a much slower action. I would call it medium slow. It has a little graphite in the rod, per the manufacturer, so it is not entirely made of fiberglass. This does give the rod more backbone when comparing it to other fiberglass rods, but not so much as to make anywhere near as stiff as a graphite rod. The inscription on the rod itself states 'parabolic action'. That would about explain it. There is quite a bit of flex in the tip and the butt of the rod, with less in the middle, where the 2 sections join. This rod just begs to be cast! The wraps don't have the quality in craftsmanship that you will see on a higher end rod, and the epoxy work is the same. They aren't bad- just not as finely wrapped and there is more of a 'glob' of epoxy than you would see on a TFO or Orvis. I love the bright yellow blank, and the gold wraps. It is gaudy to the point that it's pretty. The reel seat is made of cherry and aluminum. The cork grip has a nice 2 tone look to it, and there is some fill spots in all 5 of these that I have purchased. It won't win any awards for the finest cork grip on the market, but at this price, that point is moot.Of note, is that this rod is inscribed as a 6'6", 3/4 WT rod. This is not a 3 WT. It will cast 3 WT line, but casts a 4 or 5 WT much better. I had the best cast with a 4 WT Vangaurd weight forward line from Bass Pro Shops. I emailed Wright McGill and Co, the makers of this rod, and asked them about the weight rating. They responded promptly, and stated that this rod was indeed a 4/5 WT rod. So I'm assuming that this is a misprint on the rod blank? It doesn't really matter to me, for my purposes, but I thought I would throw this out there for anyone else that this may be important to.I paired this with a $13 Martin model 63 tuna can reel from ebay, and it is just a dandy. I have more coin in the line than the rod and reel combined! Anyone should be happy with this rod. Of course, there are a lot of equipment snobs in fly fishing. I love good quality gear. However, this rod casts as good as any I've ever cast, and I have seen several old timers fishing this rod (or its' 7', 5/6 WT Brother) on the South Toe River near Mt Mitchell, NC. And for what it's worth, they were tearing those rainbows and brookies up with that light saber!! You really don't have to spend a fortune to get into this sport. This rod will be a great introduction to a new fly fisherman, and should be a lot of fun even for those more experienced. Get this rod!! You will not regret it!!
