Laser-sharp cutting! Love this. Nice and compact, light enough to easily move and store out of the way. Perfect for small jobs. Very easy to use and very safe. I don't know if you could cut yourself if you tried. (Please don't try. That's not a challenge.) ;-)

I make a lot of my own cards and this has been such a great tool for trimming neatly at home! It's easy to use and after a couple years of occasional cutting every now and then, it's still cutting well. I found the blade works best when you alternate the direction you cut each time rather than always cutting one direction. I wish it were a little more grippy so it didn't slide around the surface or whatever it's sitting on so easily, but it's easy to hold down and it doesn't take away from the usability.

Having used an Xacto rolling cutter for years for various projects, I was hoping this would be a little better. Instead, I'm faced with a few compromises. For one, the edges that I set the paper against to make right angle cuts ends about an inch from the cutting edge. This gives thin strips of paper a place to "bend" with the force of the blade, and is of limited use with short pieces. The blade carrier -- the plastic block that houses the roller blade and that travels along the rail -- is bulky and travels over the translucent guide / protector. It means I can't easily press down on this strip to hold paper in place (necessary sometimes with narrower pieces).Neither of these were shortcomings with my old Xacto cutter. On the plus side, this is well made with a painted steel work surface, generous 18 inches of working with, a smooth blade action with a larger cutter wheel that the Xacto. Bonus, the cutter wheel is replaceable, and the translucent guide/protector is easily (temporarily) removable. So although I'm disappointed this cutter unchecked a couple of boxes that its less expensive predecessor had covered, it's a well built piece of equipment that works well and ought to last a long while.

Works well to cut through paper or other thin light materials. Unlike the Fiskars rolling trimmers, the Dahl does not require the user to press the cutting head down with force to cut through the paper. It shears through the paper. Because the bar is fixed in place during use, you must look at an angle to see the cut line to set your paper in place for cutting. A direct overhead light will put a shadow in that area making it difficult to adjust the paper to the exact cut line you want. The guides in my case line up nearly exactly. If I set the paper at the 5 inch mark. I get a piece of paper that is cut at 5 inches from its edge. In my case this means trying to set the edge of the paper to split the guide mark in half. The sides came misaligned-by that I mean if I put a piece of paper against the side and made a cut, the cut was not a 90 degree angle to the side. One side was off by about a degree and the other side was off by about 4 degrees. However this is not permanent. To adjust, turn the unit over and you can adjust the plastic base to be perpendicular to the cut line. There are three screws attaching the plastic on each side to the metal base. Loosen the two screws on each side away from the cutting side of the board and adjust. I used an old drafting triangle to adjust/check the alignment.Another review complained that the constuction was shoddy and the cutter came off the rail on his fourth or fifth cut. The only way I can see that possibly happening would be if he tried to use it to cut/trim some inappropriate material-something too hard for the uses detailed in the little user sheet that came with the cutter.I thought about only giving this 4 stars because the sides were not aligned perpendicular to the cutting edge but since it is easy to adjust, once done, this is an excellent trimmer. It is nice to be able to handle material up to 18 inches wide. The instructions say it can cut up to 7 sheets of 20 lb. bond paper. It will but it becomes very fussy to get it just right with that many sheets at once. I regularly cut 2 sheets of 90 lb. stock at once. Three sheets of 90 lb. stock work barely and doesn't feel good to me even though the results were fine. For hobbyist use, this is a great unit. For intensive, continuous use look at one of the pro models.
