From the Manufacturer

EPS165 is a popular D'Addario hybrid bass set combining the high strings from an EPS170 (.45 and .65) with the low strings from an EPS160 (.85 and .105). This set is optimal for players looking for the ideal combination of biting high end, punchy lows and super long life. Fits basses with a string scale length of up to 36 1/4 inches.

ProSteels are D'Addario's brightest and most magnetic bass strings. A specialized steel alloy delivers harmonically rich, brilliant high-end coupled with deep, tight lows that work in tandem to create the coveted "Piano tone" steel players crave. Great for both articulate fingering or aggressive picking, ProSteels give you the extra edge and punch you need to cut through the mix.

If you -like me- were wondering how low a set of heavy Pro Steels will go without sounding like hot garbage, the answer is Drop C#. These strings are perfect for that clanky, almost overbright tone of the likes of D.D. Verni and other speed metal players of the 80's. I put them on an unbranded Glarry that I bought for 80 bucks on Amazon and dressed out in gold hardware. Let me tell you, with these strings this thing sounds just as good if not better than my Ibanez. I would say the heavy set would have a perfect range of Drop C# to D Standard without being overly tight for most players.

These strings are absolutely awesome in every way! They are very smooth and add a brightness to your tone that is incredible if that is what your are looking for. Stainless steel strings really make you pop out in the mix and these are the best I've found. You won't be disappointed in these if you like cutting through and being heard! Very crisp and detailed sound. I use them on a medium scale Fender Aerodyne with no problems. I cut my strings to allow 2 to 3 wraps around my tuning pegs so these long scale strings fit fine on my medium scale bass. They fit perfectly fine and they add alot of bite to my sound which I love!

I've gone through nickel wound fenders, D'Addarios, Rotosound pinks, Dunlop Super Brights, DR Hi Beams and DR low riders so far. These have given me a better mileage. They stay really fresh for about 3 months, and perform admirably well for at least three more months. Considering most strings sound great in their own way while they're fresh, the deep bass and bite are great overall on these. My current set has taken a beating for over 6 months and still delivers funky brights and good bass.No wonder why D'Addarios are so popular.P.S. I have still on my try list elixirs Coated, earny cobalts and roto steels

I have been searching for these strings in India since 8 years now. Most of the time they were either available in Mumbai or outside India so I carried on with Nickle wound. I always wanted to record modern thrash bass tone which could only be possible due to Lighter gauges stainless steel strings. They are brighter than Nickle wound and apt for Heavy metal songs. Trust me on this been playing bass since 2 decades now.

I'm absolutely in love with these strings. I've had them on only a day and currently love the sound and feel of them. On first impression, the strings felt a lot abrasive against my fingers than the D'Addario Nickel Roundwounds that I was removing from my Jazz Bass. The strings tuned right up to pitch and I only had to adjust them 2 times as they settled in.As for the sound, it's, well, amazing. The sound I get with the neck pickup (Jazz Bass) and tone wide open is simply incredible. Both pickups sound very good too as does the bridge solo'd. Roll off the tone and you get a nice, deep sound. The highs and the lows on this set of strings are balanced out very well.I play a mix of genres and bands, think Rush/Green Day/Iron Maiden/Smashing Pumpkins, bands like that. The strings adapt well to any sound required for my playing. The strings feel very rough, a lot tougher than traditional roundwounds. They will wear out your frets faster and your fingers will probably hate you after a few hours.I would recommend these strings for anyone playing rock/metal/progressive and looking for a really bright sound with deep low ends. I would not recommend the strings for beginners as they are very rough against your fingers and could be very painful if you haven't developed callouses. Conclusion: D'Addario ProSteels are great strings for bassists looking for a really bright sound with a balanced low end. They are very rough against your fingers so I wouldn't recommend them for beginners.Update 18 November 2024 - it’s been over 7 years since my review and I still stand by every word I said. I don’t play as much anymore, and as such am still running the last set I bought in 2020. Between then and now I tried a few other brands, but kept coming back to D’Addario ProSteels. I’d like to add as well that when the strings get old, they don’t develop that sticky feeling you’d get with nickel wound. They also still sound okay and definitely passable for most scenarios where the bass is a background instrument. I think I’ll treat myself to a new set after 4 years!

I am not a fan of D'Addario strings for bass, but I am glad I listened to a couple reviews of these particular strings for drop tuning. I play in one band that uses Eb tuning for blues rock covers where I need to use a 5-string active Fender Jazz bass, again, not one of my preferred products (I mostly play Warwick and Ken Smith basses, which do not have the sound or look for this band's target market). I struggled with many different strings with higher tension from LaBella, Rotosound, Sadowsky, DR DDT, and Fodera. None set up well on this bass with playing tension or intonation consistency at the drop tuning. Flatwounds were the right tension, but the high end was just not sitting well in the mix. I changed the stock Fender bridge to a higher mass Hipshot A and the pickups to Reed James VVN Vintage Neo noiseless models with higher magnetic density than the original Fender Noiseless. Nothing seems to work. I bought these strings as a last resort prior to buying a new, custom jazz-style bass with 35" scale. I'm glad I did! They give enough tension at Eb tuning to have accurate intonation and feel. Not the best low B, but usable without being too un-focused or mushy. They also are not as bright as I expected after reading the product info. I do have back off the treble somewhat for this style of music, but not as much as some of the other steel string I tried, but more than nickel strings. I put these strings between, say, Pedulla or Warwick Black Label and above Rotosound Swing Bass Nickels. I would recommend these strings if you are detuning to Eb on a 34" scale bass and still need good playability and brighter strings than flatwounds. . I just bought 2 more sets as a backup.

It is so hard to find heavy rated strings. I love the extra mass and resulting tension of heavy strings...makes for a much better attack and tone. For finger playing, the tighter tension really brings out the attach and punch, particularly when playing at the bridge pickup. This also tends to avoid a lot of fret "clicking" common with looser strings that flap all around with harder plucking. One can attack the strings pretty hard and they stay under control. I also found the heavy strings hold their tuning much better than lighter strings, as well as have much more consistent sustain. Light strings quickly lose volume when left ringing... These strings maintain volume for several seconds after the initial attack. For a long time I used DR heavy strings, but these are significantly cheaper and sound very consistent to DR strings.Pros:1. Super clean, refined tone,2. Brighter attack that cuts through the mix,3. More consistent volume, and maintains volume during sustain. If you don't use a compressor to regulate your volume, these strings help quite a bit,4. Just a better, deeper, punchier, more consistent tone when compared to light gauge strings.Cons:1. If you're are used to light gauge strings, you will have to get used to these. These higher tension strings require a harder stroke. You may experience some fatigue when first trying these, but the tonal advantages are well worth the effort of getting your fingers in better shape.
