Chapin’s 8701B garden push seeder takes the back strain out of planting your vegetable garden. The 1.5-liter, rust-resistant poly hopper is supported on a durable powder-coated steel frame. You have 6 seed plates to choose from to accommodate up to 20 varieties of produce. The zinc plow tears through the soil, the seed is placed and the wide rear wheel replaces and pats the soil, all while you’re pushing it through your garden. An adjustable row marker allows you to set it for the next row so you can quickly follow the correct spacing, depending on your seed.

I grow a large garden (>1/2 acre). This made the planting super easy and efficient. No more broken back. No more making rows, dropping seeds, covering rows.... 1

I almost did not buy this product because I was tired of being greatly disappointed with other so called planters. I am glad I decided to gamble on one more try on a planter. This planter actually works and is based on the planters that are used on farms. Easy to use in garden. Multiple planter plates worked perfect for me. My corn rows are coming up great. Even the plate for tiny carrot seeds work well. This is a great value for the price AND IT WORKS. I would definitely recommend this planter to anyone who asks. Very light and was simple to assemble. Should have gotten one much earlier

Takes a little bit of trial and error. I figured out if you keep the level of the seeds under the plate hub you can actually see the plate pick up a seed and drop it. Because every now and then a seed doesn’t get picked up. Also the instructions leave out some Important information. You need to set the depth of the seed and adjust the belt Tension. Also, the ground needs to be tilled and soft., It won’t work on hard packed soil.

This product worked like a charm! I'm a new-to-farming-Gen-X "oldster" and needed a foolproof way of planting my flower seeds...sunflower, dahlias, zinnias, peonies and wildflowers. Each seed comes in so many different sizes so the easy to switch out discs were a breeze to use.I'm not even joking when it comes to using this thing. I'm about 5'7 and out-of-shape and pushing the Chapin Seed Planter was easy, the occasional rock or two in the soil might slow down progress but most rocks the wheel just ran right on over and kept on going. I wasn't strained, nor did I ever have to fight with this Planter, I thought it was a bit flimsy out of the box but really it's a magnificent device designed to save your back and your soul. Who knew?I had help from my 13 year old assembling the handle, which helps with two people but one person could do it alone. I think overall for the value, the time saved by not having to bend over and move row to row is truly what makes this nifty little seed planter so great. Can't imagine I'd be able to walk if I had to do it all by hand. Save your back and some money.

Well....seemed like a good purchase for the price point. I originally bought this to plant sunflowers. Box came pretty beat up so that made me pretty concerned that the parts inside were broken or missing. HOWEVER when I was trying to install the row attachment, I noticed the chute that goes from the hopper to the cutter where the seed is inserted to the ground wasn't even in the hole in the base of the frame. Could this have been from the rough shipping???? maybe but there are two bolts on both sides of the base plate and this thing was stuck on one of the bolt heads. This was probably due to manufacturing (China) and very poor-quality control.I was ready to just to send back but I needed to get this field planted so I decided to take the chute apart and see if I could move it over into the hole. Had to take 6-8 screws out and remove the bolt on the bottom to move the chut into the hole. All this to say it did work and I was able to get this back to together and get my sunflower field planted. It worked well and was easy to use.See if it holds up. Only tested with sunflower seeds.NOTE: have your soil prepared or this will not work correctly, and you don't want debris (grass, weeds etc) in the dirt because this stuff will clog the cutter and part that pulls dirt back over the seed and you will have to keep stopping. I would rake that stuff out before planting.Crappy assembly and poor-quality control is the reason for my low rating!

Laid in a 150' by 60' sunflower bed. Rototilled the soil down 7", removed most of the large rocks. The planted area hadn't been tilled before. The grass had been cut down about a week earlier and landscape raked as well as possible, although this still left a moderate amount of dead grass that got tilled in.The seeder worked well enough where the soil was clean, but in the areas where I ran into tilled in grass, it quickly jammed up the piece that closes the trough behind the plow. I constantly had to pick up the back of it and let it clear.I also wasn't really able to keep the rows as even as I'd like, but I'd mostly attribute that to having to clear the jams. I didn't run into any issues of seed not feeding that I could tell, but I'm not confident the seed spacing is consistent over the whole row because of the jamming.I chose this unit over the Earthway seeder because this one explicitly said that it included a seed plate for sunflower seeds. Most of the articles on the Earthway said you'd need to buy a blank seed plate and make one for sunflower seeds.Assembly was trivial, it's all of 8 bolts, 4 for the handlebar and 4 for the guide rod. Construction quality is fairly decent. I wouldn't have minded the handle being about 4" taller. Seems like it'd be easy enough to cut the handlebar tube and add a sleeve with several holes to provide some adjustment. It might not fair to the seeder to expect it to do better. It is only $98.99 and it is a push unit. I really wanted something like a Jang Seeder or Clean Seeder that attaches to a 2" toolbar and mounts on the three point hitch on my tractor. Unfortunately there just wasn't a way to get one in time before the third week in August, which is the close of sunflower planting season in the south.Final summary is if you've got clean soil, this will probably work well enough for you. It took me less than 2 hours (not sure of the exact time) to seed 29 rows that were 150' long. If you don't have clean soil, I'd avoid this one, and probably any push seeder.

The seed discs etc are all plastic and instead of a chain drive there is a wee thin tiny little belt that drives everything. This wouldn't last long on market garden but for a backyard gardener this might last between 2 and 5 years. Keep it out of the sun perhaps back in it's box when not in use.
