I bought this for a very odd reason. I don’t weld (and probably never will), but I bought a Turkish lamp that I wanted to use as a subtle nightlight. It is not at *all* as subtle as it looked in the photos, but it was also too cute to get rid of. So I needed a cover to put on it, but was scared of towels/cloth covers catching on fire since I’d be leaving the light on all night. Did some digging, found out that there’s fireproof felt, and bought this product in the smallest size possible since it’s a small lamp. I cut it up and have it stringed up by safety pins as a little cover that I take on and take off, and safe to say that this hasn’t caught on fire yet! It also doesn’t overheat/get hot like some of my little hand towels did. Very grateful for this product and its unusual purpose :)

This blanket is handy to protect sensitive items when welding or grinding. I do some arc welding in my wood working shop. I use the blanket to cover tools that are left on the bench when welding. It seems to have good flame/spark retardant. After a few projects there are no holes in the blanket. I wish I had gotten a larger size. The 18" x 24" is kind of small.

This felt pad is about 1/4 inch thick. It is a non-woven felt, soft and compliant. This makes it easy to tuck around plumbing to protect areas from torch heat exposure. There is no surface protection of the pad so it will not be resistant to snagging and scuffing. Good for occasional use or as a consumable for a job. I found the pad to pick up dirt and sawdust debris easily. This is not a flaw but the nature of felt and something to be aware of. I have fiberglass welding blankets that are much more durable but difficult to place in tight spaces.

I ended up using this to insulate some joists while soldering some pipes. Worked well for my purposes so far. I didn't feel any appreciable heat on anything behind the mat either after each job. I haven't used anything hotter than your standard propane torch around this though, so your mileage may vary.I didn't see/feel any damage done to the mat after the few joints done, so time will tell how long I can keep using this.

I put this mat on our wooden deck to add a some fire safety protection when using our BBQ. I plan on also using it to protect the wooden studs and walls when doing copper pipe soldering during plumbing renovations and repairs.

I got this to cover up a workbench in my shop when I am welding to keep any stray sparks from damaging anything. I got a new plasma cutter, I never had one before, and I had this cardboard box with some packing paper and other things in it on the floor about 15 feet away from where I normally weld. It was far enough away that I would not have to worry about it with my welder. Well, the plasma torch produced WAY more sparks than I am used to, and because I had my welding helmet on, set to cutting, I did not realize they were as bad as they were, and that box caught some sparks and ignited the paper in it. By the time I got done playing with the plasma cutter the fire was pretty big... This welding blanket was right there protecting my workbench, I grabbed it and plopped it over the box... stomped on it a bit and was able to put out the fire! I'm so glad this was there!!! there's some charred cardboard and melted plastic stuck to it now, but it did one catch fire... it did what it was supposed to do! I'm going to get more of these and enclose an area with them to plasma cut inside to contain all those sparks... and keep carboard boxes away as well of course!

I put this between the wall and some copper pipes I had to braze. The blanket took the heat and flame of the torch without issue, and the wall behind it was unblemished. The blanket is surprisingly thick, and the material feels durable. I’m thinking of ordering the largest blanket for some welding I need to do inside a project vehicle.

This blanket is a simple and basic welding accessory that is often overlooked by people putting together a DIY / home hero welding setup.Sparks are an unavoidable consequence of all facets of welding operations, not just then welding itself, but also grinding and torch preheating and even oxy-acetylene cutting operations, not to mention plasma torch work. In tight spaces, or spaces where nearby objects may be marred by splatter and spark, or grinding waste, etc., a welder wants and needs a protective blanket.Naturally it needs to be reasonably flameproof, and this blanket seems to fit the bill. I'm not sure I buy the "carbon fiber" claim, but this blanket does seem to get the job done with a minimum of fuss.Be aware that these and all welding blankets are CONSUMABLE items. They won't last forever. They will sacrificially wear out to protect your other surfaces. But, for DIY and weekend warrior welders, this is a viable option. The size choices are well considered and it is reasonable to have a large and a small. They can also be very helpful when doing light open-flame soldering of plumbing, etc.As always, exercise all fire cautions when welding, brazing, grinding or soldering with open flame. This blanket is not going to snuff out a fire, but it might prevent one from getting started. You'll always want a fire extinguisher handy. Use common sense. This blanket is part of common sense welding technique.Five stars - no issues. A good consumable thick spark-resistant blanket.
