Order drive to play 4K UHD on my PC. Drive stated it would play UHD but did not specify that you required very specific PC specs in order to play UHD. Requirements are that you have an Intel 10th or 11th gen CPU that has SGX.So the drive arrived and worked great on DVD and Blu-ray but not UHD.Customer service was very helpful in coming to a mutual arrangement. Quick response to inquiries.

Bought this since I run an arch machine and I was having a hard time getting an affordable drive to start my backup hobby. I struck gold when I came across this drive. It is definitely region locked to japan, but using the Ultimate MakeMKV guide you can grab the firmware pack and easily find the firmware you need (ends in 22, read the other comment)It’s not hard either to flash the firmware and this thing rips discs at a decent speed, not crazy fast but good enough. I love it and would buy another when the time comes!

It's worked good for remuxing blurays and uhds. The firmware downgrade was pretty simple to do for uhds. I've used it for 6 months so far and done about 120 discs. Still works flawless.I wish Amazon also carried the powerbrick. I was able to get one imported from Japan but it would have been nice to get one the same time as the drive.

This external Buffalo drive offers compatibility with 4K content for those "on the move" and with modern laptops lacking an optical drive. It is quiet, does the job it claims to do, namely playing 4K content. However, for the price, it lacks decent connectivity and is of suspect, plastic construction. Importantly - and unlike the similar Archgon equivalent - on sale with Amazon UK for about £10 more - it does not come with any form of travel case or protective cover - which is disappointing for a device clearly designed to be portable. As I try to do with my reviews, I will offer some positive and negative observations:-Positives+ Does the job - plays 4K content+ Quiet in operation+ Quick when the situation allows it - for example importing an audio CD in to iTunesNegatives- Ridiculously short USB cable that is molded to the case end- No USB-C connectivity, only USB-A/3.1 offered - more of a challenge for newer laptops- Plastic construction - feels lightweight and flimsy. I worry it might be to fragile to survive a laptop bag- No transport case or protective sleeve - seems a bit "cheap" for a £125 driveIt's a bit too soon to say how this drive will stand up to life on the road as I've only had it a few days. It arrived well protected, in a beefy cardboard shipping box that is far too large to take with it in general use. I've tried it with my LG Gram laptop and 2 desktop PCs and it works smoothly with all. It is mostly quiet in operation. However, the ridiculously short USB connecting cable makes ergonomics a joke - I don't have a lot of USB-A sockets on my laptop and have little choice where I can connect this - which makes any work surface a compromise as you have to work around the placement of this device. The cable is so short that when I tried to connect to a mid-tower chassis with USB ports half way up the front, I had to create a stack of books to elevate the drive to allow the stupidly short cable to reach.Sum-Up: Defeat snatched from the Jaws of Victory - a well-performing drive mechanism in a cheap case with disappointingly miserly cabling and no travel case.

I really like this drive. It feels like high quality and a good value. I have the latest Cyber DVD software (I purchased it separately.I bought this to plug into my Dell Optiplex 7000 media center computer. The Cyber software told me that I need to install the Intel SGX extension and provided a link to download it. I did so and installed it. However, I discovered that the firmware in the computer doesn't provide a way to turn on the SGX in the BIOS. I contacted Dell to see if they can provide a way to turn it on. They told me no and to contact Intel. So, even thought I recently bought this Dell Optiplex 7000, I am on the hunt for a new manufacturer and computer. So, I still cannot watch my 4k UHD Blu Rays.

An excellent external UHD blu ray player. Most of the latest PC (gaming) cases do not have a slot for installing an internal CD/DVD/Blu ray drive. So buying this very capable piece of hardware allows me to play all of these discs, including UHD blu ray, with my PC. I don't have to throw my collection away! The machine is well made, and looks great. It is for the Japanese market. The instruction manual is in Japanese. Fortunately it is a plug and play item, so it is not essential to read the manual. It does have an extra lead to be connected to a 5 volt power supply I would imagine. I think when the indicator light is red and not green, it needs this extra power.Lastly, as with a few of the Japanese sellers, aside from good and prompt services, the seller included a good luck charm as a thank you token. A cute touch.

I have to say, it was a complete nightmare getting this thing up and running. Some of my problems could've been avoided had Buffalo been so kind as to include English instructions in the box. I wasn't surprised at the lack of English instructions when I saw the box, as the text on the box is mostly in Japanese, but I also had no idea I was ordering a Japanese SKU for this drive from Amazon. Now, note that I said SOME of my problems could've been avoided with English instructions. The people producing and selling UHD Blu-ray discs seem to think everyone plans to use the discs on the regular. I'm sure SOME people do that, but I'm sure many people just want them because of the fidelity of the content on them, and they want to rip them for use with their Plex servers or whatever.Short rant directed at people who make UHD so inconvenient to use:You know, if you don't want people ripping discs, then give them a convenient way of experiencing the content on them. Don't load the discs up with unskippable ads. Don't make the discs take forever to load because of your security checks. Stop treating the people who buy discs like criminals. Maybe make a 50- or 100-disc UHD disc changer while you're at it. Do anything to facilitate making one of these God-awful UHD discs convenient in any form to use.Anyway, yeah, basically, you have to resort to community-made tools and community-made firmware updates to use this drive to its fullest. Make sure you have both USB cables plugged in, and don't use a USB hub unless it has its own power source. (If you see a red light flashing on the drive, then it's not getting sufficient power.) Get MakeMKV and consult the software's forum for info on unlocking the capabilities of this drive. It's a rebranded LG BU40N, so use firmware intended for that.
